Waltons up on 101 just north of Elgin has good fish also. Hushpuppies are fairly good also. Prices are right.

I do like Newberns but every once in awhile you can get a piece of fish that is just not good. When that occurs send it back and they'll fix another. Newberns does use only Mississippi pond raised fish. Beware of the places that don't tell where their fish comes from.
Wayne's Catfish Haven down Hwy 43 in Russellville - across from that drive in theater – has FANTASTIC whole catfish. If you’re not gonna order the whole catfish, don’t bother making the drive ‘cause nothing else there is good. VERY crowded on Friday and Saturday nights. No separate smoking / non-smoking section.

Fisherman's resort is no longer a restaurant.

I will have to give Frosty King a try. I like good fried fish every now and then.

Have you tried Walton's on 101 in Elgin? I LOVE IT !!!!!!!!!!

I have tried Walton's. It is the closest restaurant from work. Not to many other choices. I love their hushpuppies. The fish is ok. It tends to be a little over cooked. But it is the only thing that I really enjoy there. The BBQ is very salty. Can't take too much salt. If someone asked me where to go for catfish, I would say Walton's because I haven't found anything better.

Have you tried Lash's? They bought the Chevron on 101. Didn't know how they were doing with it or if they were serving out of there now.

RE: Landry's

It's been a few years, but I remember that none of the food any of us got was any good. I filled out a comment card letting them know of our displeasure, and guess what they sent me: a certificate for a free appetizer. Like if I didn't like their food I was going to go back?! Right.
I Agree
I am amazed and not amazed as to why NEWBERN's has a full parking lot...Like E, I travel a lot and have the opportunity to eat at numerous different restaurants Catfish is really big in Mississippi and in mid to Northern La...I am seen catfish cooked and served with so many different seasonings, I lost count. The point is from the variety of restaurants that serve Catfish, Newberns would be on the low end of the scale of 10..
I am not overly fond of catfish, but occasionally I will find somewhere with good fish that I enjoy. The best that I have found recently is at the East Colbert Church of Christ near the intersection of River Road and County Line Road in the Ford City Community.

For $ 8.00, it's all you can eat. The hours are only from 12:30 - 6:30. The last account that I had, their fish is provided by Lash's in Elgin.

As for as Swap John's, never like it, don't care for it.

About the best thing that I like about Newburn's is the slaw. My experiences there are to avoid the rush, because you get fresher and better cooked food.
Watch for Swamp John's doing a local fund raiser. Their plates are usually $8, $2 of that going to help some club or school and the food tastes better out of their mobile trucks than at their restaurant.

For your $8, you get fish (4), chicken, or shrimp, slaw, great fries, wonderful hushpuppies, tartar sauce, and a large sweet (or un-sweet) tea.

And, you get to take that home and don’t have to worry with smokers, or tips, or screamin’ kids, or rude waitresses.

You got that right! When I heard SJ's was opening the restaurant, I couldn't wait to try it. Then, I ate there....... Confused

Something about that truck Cool
Also, try **** of the Walk. We used to eat at the one in Opelika quite a bit. I believe there is another one in Nshville as well. Top of the River in Gadsden offers a similar menu selection, with more choices. I'd definitely go back to both of these establishments.

They both have the pickled onions, cornbread, greens, and slaw for appetizers. I think they flip the cornbread in the air if my memory serves me correctly...
Oh Bryan's in Mt. Hope has wonderful blackend cajin catfish. I haven't ate at the one in Colbert County so I can't comment on that location. Also the salad bar is one of the best I have ever found. No alcohol served at the Mt.Hope location. Oh I guess I should tell just where it is. It's on old 24 I think it's now 724. From Russelville take 24East. about 2 miles turn right after the parade gas station that is on the left. Go about 10 miles or so it's on the left so you can't miss it. If you do you will wind up in Moulton.Ha

At some catfish places you have to ask for your fish to be fried "soft". If you don't you'll get overcooked fish, thus "hard".

LOL!! Thats funny.... I have eaten catfish for over 40 years and never had to ask for "soft" catfish.
Why Do You Think
Newbern's parking lot is full Friday and Saturday nights...weekdays average...with that said...
I have observed several post that pretty well establishes Newberns Catfish as being below what you, the customer expected to get..Most..said they would not return...they have been in business for quite sometime and apparently have a repeat business...the questions are..
Why do you think they are always busy?
Do you think that everybody that eats there and is not pleased...walks out and never says a word about it ?
Do you think most of the people who continually eat there, have limited experiences with other Catfish Places, and they think Catfish actually is suppose to taste that way?
Give me some of your ideas here...We have a oxamoron..meaning parking lot full, but most post say poor catfish...explain this if you can...

Well, I can only speak for myself, but the only reason we ate there Friday was we had company in from Michigan and last time they were here(2001), we ate there, and they were impressed, and wanted to go back. The fish and fixings were good that night.
IMHO, most that keep going back there to eat, have eaten there for years. And either are used to it, or just wont go anywhere else because Newberns is smoke free. I am wondering too if the religion thing isnt part of it... they used to advertise alot of religion on their sign, which is now gone.

I have two close relatives who are 70+ in age and eat there. I think they like going with their friends and seeing a lot of other older folks there. I guess you could say that they feel like they fit in, so it's not intimidating, and there's no loud 80s rock music blaring. That's my best guess. One of them knows catfish pretty well. She's caught her share, cooked it, served it, and eaten it. She tells them EXACTLY how she wants it cooked, and she's quick to send it back if it's not to her taste. The other wouldn't know a good catfish if it bit her on the heel! Smiler

[Edited to echo two points of Bama's: Yep, they've eaten there for years, they're comfortable there, and they don't have to worry about the smoke. Both can't stand it. I don't think the religious advertisements affect them one way or the other, but it's probably a draw for some folks around here. God and catfish...such an odd combination they chose! Confused
I ate there last July 2006 when I was home last.

It was getting late, and to be honest, the fried fish had an old greasy taste, the taste of old cooking oil.

I take it as our fault since it was so late when we ate. In fact, the store closed for business while we were there.

Now, their sweet tea is wonderful. I always have at least 5 refills while there.

As far as the Christian atmosphere, it doesn't bother me. It is a private business, that is their call.

I do think their menu choices are bland. It needs improvement.

Ugh, Captain D's is NOT seafood. It is not fresh, but frozen garbage fast food. I do not consider Red Lobster very good, either. Nothing compares to fresh-catch seafood. That is one reason why I miss Savannah, GA so much. There is one seafood place near Darien, GA (1 hour south of Savannah) located 5 miles from the Atlantic (the coast there is actually mostly marsh, with lots of sawgrass that goes into the ocean). It made Southern Living's #1 seafood dump in 2000 and 2004. All you can eat for up to 90 minutes (you won't make it past 1 hour, trust me on this) seafood bar that includes fried, boiled, steamed, and fancy recipe seafood. Includes king crab legs and prime rib. Cost: $30 a person. THAT is a seafood restaurant. Captain D's is not and doesn't even compare.

I do agre with you to some degree, the problem is I'm for hundred miles from the best seafood I know of. My favorite was Captain Jewel Melvins in destin until a huricaine damaged it, the owner retired and the site was turned into a condominium project.
