At some catfish places you have to ask for your fish to be fried "soft". If you don't you'll get overcooked fish, thus "hard".

LOL!! Thats funny.... I have eaten catfish for over 40 years and never had to ask for "soft" catfish.

I guess I should explain. At so many catfish places they tend to overcook the fish. When that happens the fish will be "hard" But if you ask for "soft" fried catfish they won't come from the latest cooking that is always done on a busy day to keep ahead of the customers. So, If you ask for your fish to be soft or whatever you may have to wait but your fish will be freshly prepared and not a part of "mass cooking". I hope that clears that up.
We, too, like the Catfish Hotel in Shiloh, TN. This place is also known as Hagy's. If you get there between 4:30 and 5:00 pm there is not much of a wait. Any later and you will. They have adirondack type chairs on the front deck shaped like fish that are very unique and you can sit there and watch the river flowing by while you wait. The AYCE catfish is really good, and their cole slaw (mix your own) is really good.
I grew up in Florida, so I am used to the best seafood. I rarely order seafood around here, and I NEVER order catfish, because the flavor doesn't compare to the good stuff. I go to Bayou Blue for their tuna steaks and alligator tail. Their fried oysters aren't too bad.

Adding shrimp to my pasta is as close as I'll get to "seafood" at chain restaurants.

But you better believe when I get to the coast (or a large city where restaurants actually get fresh shipments daily), I will eat about two dozen oysters on the half shell just to get my fill.
LOL I just found this post now, going back and looking at different stuff.

Somebody had mentioned The Fish Creel in Anderson. My husband's family owns that restaurant and its where all of his family parties are held. Pretty good stuff. The only things that lack are the hours (they close early) and the fact that last I knew, they didn't take credit/debit cards.

Also, in response to what Unclegus said; I like my catfish grilled. My husband did it up with lemon and dill the other night and it was DELICIOUS!!

from hwy 72 has the best catfish fillets to me. The are have a good taste and thy are not greasy. The have good oysters also.

The Rockin Chair on hwy 72 in Tuscumbia has good whole and fillet catfish. They remind me of Lash's.

I agree 100%. But if the Rock'n Chair uses Asian fish I won't go back there. I'm going to call Tom the manager and ask.
Captin Dee's . yes Captin Dee's
I know a lot of you are going to frown at the thought, and I know I have already made a post about them on here before.
I went there today, they have a new menu with lo-cal choices. I had the Atlantic Salmon sandwich, broiled not fried. I had mine blackened and a side of fries, which instead of ketchup, I put the malt vinegar on them.
It was one of the best lunches I have had in a while, The total was only$6.50. If you want to try something good, go and try one of their lo-cal or lo-carb selections instead of fried, it has a much better taste and is better for you.
I went back and read every post and I didn't a single one talking about the fish fry at Underwood-Petersville Fire Department! Frowner
Now if you want some good fish at a good price and you don't want to leave hungry then this is the place for you. We almost every month and get our fill and the proceeds go the department. It's just a good deal all around.
I have been in Loretto all day for a funeral. It is odd that the subject of Jr. white and Riley's came up. Just today I was thinking, if someone wanted to open a restaraunt, Loretta would be the place. The best thing there, is the Hardies, and I don't even like Hardies.
The last several times I went to Rileys, it seems like there is always rodents or insects, along with the bad service. So yes, I agree with you Alysmom. I do remember When it was White's, and it was one of the best places around at that time.
I have had catfish at every place mentioned herein, from the most prominent to the most obscure and I can tell you Newburn's was the absolute worst. Walton's Restaurant on highway 101 offers catfish fillets smoked/grilled and grilled cajun style for those who are avoiding fried fish.
The best I have had recently came from The Old Rocking Chair Restaurant and Country Store, U.S. highway 72 west, Tuscumbia, just past the Alabama Music Hall of Fame. Their two catfish fillet plate was just under $9.00 and they have an all you can eat for about a dollar more..honestly, the two fillet were larger than my hand and more than I could eat.
BUDSFARM...
I agree with you S&R Restaurant is one of my favorites...
Folks! if you want to experience good old home style fish fying with either filets or whole ...then you need to take a little trip to Moulton...Simply head east on 157 from Muscle Shoals....as you start to enter into the city they will be on the right...it is a unimposing building, in fact sort of plain...but don't let that fool ya...for what they lack in outside flash...they make up for on the plate.....
I don't believe you will be sorry....They also serve steaks but i have never eaten one there so if ya do, tell us about it...
The best catfish restaurant ever is located in Millbrook, Alabama "Catfish House" they have excellent crab claws, whole catfish & catfish filets, shrimp, chicken fingers and bbq they have the best hushpuppies ever. We have tried alot of seafood resturants and they are by far the best I would say next too them is Wayne's Catfish in Littleville. When we visit family in Millbrook we frequent the "Catfish Hotel," they always have a waiting list no matter the time.

Welcome, katceeme. Admittedly, this post has nothing to do with catfish, but I just had to tell you that the sweet face on your avatar makes me smile. How precious.

I hope that's not a picture of katceeme's child. Poor kid.
for more than one reason...
You guys are so sweet. I just love y'all. But really, I am not mad at all. Unless he or she tells me differently, I assume it was just a misunderstanding & she forgot about it or something...that or she's a little embarrassed by it. If you are reading this katceeme, we're cool from my end and I embarrass myself all the time. So, don't worry about it. Smiler
