Yep.

The Future. The Now.

Like it, or love it. It's here.

The days of "Opie" sacking your groceries, while "Mildred" rang  them up on a "cash register" are LONG gone.

Not to PANIC though!

The computer age has given us..."Animated Mildred".

You can't see Her, but she speaks when you approach her.

"Laser Sensor" I guess...?

Begin.

"Scan first item"

"Put in bag"

"Do you want to bag"?

"You didn't put in bag"

"Foreign object on bag area"

"Do you want to bag"?

WAIT FOR ASSISTANCE FROM ASSOCIATE.

No wonder Geriatric Folks avoid them like a bout of scurvy.

In the future, I might have to use the self scanners. Now, I dodge them all I can. In one chain, when the clerk tells me, "the self scanners are clear", and I tell them, "I don't use them", every time it has happened, they have smiled. As long as I can, I'm gonna give my money to a living person when I check out.

Why do they build a big store, put 24 cash registers in it, and have 2 of them open?

I probably shouldn't even tell you this much since it's classified but, it is all part of a right wing conspiracy.

I like using self check outs when they work. But if you have beer or wine it calls the clerk for approval any way so might as well go through a regular check out. Hubby hates them for the reasons you stated, doesn't scan or says there is something on the bag area. He thinks it's quicker to just get in a regular line.

Didn't the Florence Walmart have some several years ago but people weren't using them so they took them out but now have some again? In other states we've been in seems people use them a lot more, will be a line of folks waiting for the self check outs.

I stopped long ago avoiding doing things that "embarrass" my children or grandchildren.

The differential arcane behavioral norms they embrace are just not worth being concerned enough

about to compel any inconvenient alteration of my actions.  As to checkbooks and check

writing, I have never encountered any resistance from any of them to such checks as I write to them on occasions like birthdays, Christmas, or other gift-giving occasions.

Oh, I don't purposely try to embarrass him, I just inadvertently do. He's been a tech nerd since he was 6. He is the digital developer/coder for the news paper in a northern city.

Thursday night my husband and I went to see Jay Leno in Huntsville. My son had given me his old smart phone, I have trouble making a regular computer work let alone a smart one, and I texted son and asked if there was a way to make the camera zoom in. He texted me the directions and then said " I think you'll probably be unimpressed with camera phone for concert venue. Just make sure your flash off. Don't be one of those people."

I texted "I have a flash?!"

and he sent me this picture. I laughed my head off. Sorry if this pic is big, it took me over an hour just figuring out how to get it on here.

Ah,, yes, the face palm.  However, its the duty of parents to embarrass their kids, especially, the teenagers.  Grandparents enter into a natural conspiracy with the grandkids against parents.  Don't forget, grandparents know all the embarrassing stories and have pictures.

One app I found helpful allows the flash to be used as a flashlight.

Dire hate to tell you but if you have a apple phone it does not require a app any more the flashlight is built into IOS.

I like using the self checkouts but I also like going through the line and letting the cashier do it if there is no line. I hate waiting in lines. If lines are backed up and there are only 2 or 3 registers then I always go straight for the self checkouts.

They are also great if you are just running in to get a couple of things. I can be in and out in 5 - 10 minutes tops.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

No scanners at Publix  for 10 items or less in Florence.  JT, are you still buying your buggy whips from a union shop? And, all your clothing hand made?

I don't buy buggy whips, my clothing is not hand made. When possible, I will buy USA made stuff. If possible, I'll get union made goods. If I can, I will have a living, breathing human being scan my purchases and take my money. I feel like that protects their job.

At the onset of the Industrial Revolution, all clothing was handmade -- cloth woven by hand by trained weavers or rough homespun.  Then made into clothe by tailors or one's mother.

Then, waterwheels powered weaving machines turning out patterns programmed on perforated rolls of paper. Cloth was produced much faster and cheaper  That was supposed to put thousands out of work -- roaming the countryside as beggars and thieves for generation.  Funny, how that didn't work out.
