That's great news! I think this is thanks to everyone that called their representatives and gave them hell about voting for this terrible legislation. We've just taken a tiny step in the right direction.
It does not matter whether you are a dem. or a rep., this is good news for all Americans.
The incoming calls, complaining about the bill, crashed the Capitol phone system.
That means we need to KEEP calling, and/or writing!!!
Maybe Congress is FINALLY beginning to listen to the American people.

Common sense and the will of the people have finally won out. (At least this time) Maybe some of the politicians will start listening to the people and quit playing their games with our lives.

What I don't understand is how disconnected from reality these lawmakers must be. I mean even many of the ones who voted against cloture, said they did so because it was a dead bill anyway and would never make it through the house. That is not the issue here, and our "leaders" can't even realize that. Even many of the Republican opponents of the bill complained that they are getting "hammered" at home when the bill stood no chance of getting through the House. I say, it doesn't matter what the House does. It is the Senate's job as much as it is the House's to pass legislation that is in the interest of the American people, and this clearly was not.
And the idiot Kennedy says everyone who votes "no" knows that the situation is going to get worse and worse.....so his solution is to make it as bad as possible right away so it won't get worse in the future? What an idiot!
And this will likely end the immigration reform issue until next year after the presidential elections because neither party wants to touch this volatile issue? That's also ridiculous. This is NOT a volatile issue. The American people have overwhelmingly (some polls show upwards of 80%) showed their opinion on this issue. The majority does not want to legalize these criminals. We don't want them to remain here. And no one wants more to keep coming here illegally. It is that simple. Congress should not let the defeat of this crap legislation end the discussion on this problem.
The American people have spoken and said what they want. We want law and order. We want the border secured as any sovereign nation has the right to do. We want illegals to be sent home, and kept out. And we want future immigrants to do so legally. It is time that both of these arrogant political parties quit dictating what they would like for the country, and start representing the people who elect them and pay their salaries.

With proper border control, sufficient ICE agents, removal of sovereignty protection from asylum communities/counties for damage done by illegals, lawsuits for wages lost by US citizens to illegals, mandatory removal (preferable to Mexico city) instead of just across the border, fines to companies guilty of serial hiring of illegals, coupled with an efficient, timely approval of legal immigrants the problem is solvable and not racist. It is a function of will.

VERY well said,... but sad thing is HOW MANY MORE Illegals will there be by then? They KNOW that we are going to let them stay now, so they are increasing in number daily.

What power does the local governments have in this situation? Why wait for big government to do something. The message was sent to our Senate and House members, how about putting pressure on local leaders as well?

Local government CAN do something about it. It is just a hassle. They can even do like the Sheriff in Panama City: flush them out and turn them in to ICE.
And, interventor, you are correct. What we need is large scale enforcement of current laws with a few minor changes, and we can easily take away the reason for them being here as well as deport many. It is an issue that CAN be dealt with. We need minor changes to law enforcement regulations (to allow them to enforce immigration laws) and federal government funding to deport illegals collected by local agencies. We need to severely punish large scale employers of illegals, as well as cut ALL forms of aid and assistance such as social security, medical care, education, food stamps, etc. to illegals to remove their reasons for being here. We need to do away with the anchor baby law. That is a law that has outlived it's purpose, and is rampantly being abused by illegals. The border should be secured by any means necessary, even if that means militarizing the area. We need to quit instructing the national guard now on the border to back down from confrontation. These people should be treated as any criminal, nothing more. They choose to break our laws and continue to do so. They should be punished as any of us would be if we broke the law. And that has nothing to do with being racist.
