SHEFFIELD, AL (WAFF)- Authorities confronted a sex offender at the Chuck E. Cheese in Sheffield, but didn't arrest him. Police said he was doing nothing wrong.

Witnesses say a woman at the noticed the registered Lauderdale County sex offender inside the restaurant around lunch time Friday.

The man had been found guilty of sexually abusing a 13-year-old several years ago.

Sheffield police confronted the man inside the restaurant, and he told them he was there for a birthday party.

According to Alabama state law, because his victim was older than twelve, the man is still allowed to attend functions at establishments like Chuck E. Cheese as long as he lets authorities know of his intentions before hand.

"If the birthday party starts at six, you get there at six not any minute before, and if it ends at seven, you have to get off that property at seven, you cant stay on the property outside of your scope of the purpose of being there," said Kelly Muston, Lauderdale Co. Sheriff's Dept.

Investigators say the man did nothing wrong. Chuck E. Cheese also did not make the man leave the property after learning of his past.

Chuck E CHeese gives parents a false sense of security.
You should know, that they stamp parent and childs hand,s nd when you enter- presumably to make sure the stamp numbers match when adult leaves with child.
On TWO occasions recently, I left with my nephew
who had entered with HIS parents:
therefore he had a different number.
The girl at the exit looked at our hands, and said nothing.
While this is somewhat off topic, I feel compelled to let people know that they do NOT check stamps properly- don't rely on that for safety!!!
as for the Sex offender? who cares how old his victim was. He shouldnt be allowed to go to CEC.
Inappropriate.

The kids are precious, but they are all out there with ID for all to see.

Yep, you are right, earthmomma. All one would need to do is look up names in phone book, find address......SHUDDER*******

Couple safety precautions I take:
Unlisted phone
no address in phone book
lifelock(it does work)
facebook- increase privacy settings so only friends can view.

*sigh...let me know when microchips are available for kids.
While, I am sure they did -- did the officers make sure which birthday party he was there for and verify with the party that he was indeed invited and wanted to be there? No offense, but you should have better sense than to invite a sex offender to a children's birthday party at CEC. That is just setting up your guy to get his rear end kicked and it sets him up to temptation and it puts other kids at risk. Just my opinion.
