Sad to see another local small business closing.
Miley is freaking nuts.....Miley is the shoals' verson of Howard Hughes. This area is influenced by a few famalies that keep new business' from moving into the area because this will cause them to pay more for their workforce and reduce some of their profits.
Moved here 10 years ago, not much change as far as jobs, but we got plenty of places to eat.
Marty Miley please sell your property and allow someone to improve it so this area can grow. (Marina Mar).

Free enterprise? Since when has it been free enterprise.....The large stores have forced the smaller stores to close because they can't compete. Many banks will not loan funds to small business' based on the economy....The large chain stores have money and have pushed the smaller business' out. Times have changed but having a few business' control the price on everything is not a good thing. Having to choose between walmart and target or lowes and home depot is not free enterprise......
Back to Miley....It's his property he can do what he wants with it. But we are missing the boat here. The lake of the Ozarks is booming with business. They have promoted the area and it's lakes. Business' have moved there because they offer recreational opprotunities close by for their employees. Here the only thing we promote is the resturants. When is the last time a business relocated here that employed more than 100 folks? How many resturants have opened in the area in the past year? Nice town, but how many Mexican resturants do we need here? I have a friend that considered relocating a business here from AZ. He ran into more red tape for getting a business licence than other areas and he eventually went to Decatur and opened. He said the influence of old money here kept him from opening in the shoals. I love this area but I'm seeing good paying jobs go somewhere else while the next resturant is being opened.
Welcome to the Shoals! Land of opening nad closing restaurants, (some actually last 3 months), Fast loan shops, (tried to count them but lost count because they open faster than this old man can count. and a land for retirees. We have excellent golf courses, fine motels, and some tourist? attractions but few oppertunities for real jobs. When they do come up with something, (railcar plant), it turns out to be a big fizzle in the pan. Even some so-called experts get caught up in the frenzy and then have to take different attitude. When we retired snd moved home 12 years ago; our kids looked at moving here but the job situation was such that they decided against it. They are both in medical field and wages were so far below what they make it was sad. Pulmonary Therapist pay is almost 1/2 of what he makes now. 8 years experience would earn him 38 hour week with with no benefits. Same for daughter in medical records, 18 years total in records, appointment scheduling, and insurance dealings would get her part-time in Dr. office. Not a lot to offer for the future of young people here.

Yes it is. You are free to open a competing store anytime you wish.[/QUOTE

Would love too....1st. you need capital(not much around here because of low wages)

2nd: you need a loan. Banks will not loan to a start up company

3rd: license, fees, etc. (Red Tape) Very hard to get approved besides a resturant in this area.
The big money interest in this area does not want business' to move in. They will have to raise their wages to compete for workers.
Baja,

On points 1 and 2, neither are an indictment of free enterprise. You don't have to get a bank loan to raise capital. You could save money, find a friend or family member willing to invest, etc... The inability to finance a business does not mean free enterprise has failed, it means the individual's effort at financing has failed.

For point 3, please provide examples of businesses being denied licenses or permits. If it exists, it is a government failure, not a free enterprise failure. However, I don't suspect it exists.

REAL WORLD: A group tried to buy emerald beach before Kay Ubanks. The Lawyer that represented the group started the procedures on getting licences and permits. The group was denied for various reasons and each time they applied they were denied for a different reason. They decided to pull out and renovate a marina in TN on the Cumberland. Mrs. Ubanks purchased the property and now Emerald Beach is in worse shape now than it was three years ago. The group that renovated the marina in TN has sold it and moved on to another project. The powers that be knew that Mrs. Ubanks was trying to get investors to purchase the property and they did everything they could to block it so Mrs. Ubanks could buy it. She had plans on building a huge facility but now things have changed and we are left with a mess that got stuck under the bridge. Although the economy is bad right now, this area has not grown as it should've.
Your statements are true regarding getting started on opening a business, but in the real it's alot different.
Bottom line: The Shoals area has a (lingering) reputation for unions dictating wages and working conditions. Conversely, Decatur had a horrible period (many years ago) where railroad rework/maintenance workers went on strike, the railroad promptly left town, and Decatur was desperate for many years. That is the reason unions are not that strong in Decatur and another reason they have had more industry over there than here. The wild card that has now been played is "global economy", i.e. lower wages for the same quality work as here (the U.S.) The ONLY way jobs will come back is competitive wages and/or better and higher educated workforce doing work that REQUIRES more than just a strong back. Politicians can promise jobs, but, presently, the only way a town will get jobs is to finance the whole enterprise (railcar plant) and hope to make something off sales taxes and employment-related cash flows. If you have any further questions, look up "Global Economy" and you will see why your and my kids won't have it as good as we've had it. I just hope our country survives.
