A crew was working on a sewer line in downtown Sheffield and broke a main water line, Sheffield utilities has said that no one should use the water until the problem has been resolved. So how am I supposed to know when the problem is resolved,my water was completely off, now it's back on but I'm getting yellow and brown coloring in it. My husband thinks we can use it as long as we let it run a couple of minutes, I'm not so sure....help.

Boil the water for at least 5, better yet 10 minutes before using for drinking or cooking.
I would not wash anything in it.
You alone are not going to flush out the system so it will take a while for the water to clear up, just like after they flush out fire hydrants.

My husband spoke to someone at the water dept. who told him to turn on the outside spiket and let it run overnight to flush out our lines then come down in the morning and talk to Mrs.P to get an adjustment done on our bill.

i would have it tested before i considered using it water contaminated with sewer can be very fatal.
