The ponds in which the seafood is produced are rife with bacteria. The chemicals used in trhe ponds can poison your body . Google Oriental Seafood Warning and you will know where I am coming from! I have been preaching on this since 2007! LOL! Yes, I know a lot of you have never been sick but you still have the chemicals in your bodies and you still risk getting sick from the bacteria!
The only times I have ever had food poisoning was eating steamed mussles from a local Chinese restaurant here in Florence. I got food poisoning 3 times and will never eat at that establishment again. The only thing I ate different than the other people I went with all 3 times was the steamed mussles off the bar. I wonder if the local chinese restaurants use distributors who get their seafood from Asian countries.
I don't get the whole thing about Asian seafood? One of my son's spends every summer in Japan. He and his friends eat most of the seafood raw, sometimes not even dead yet and they never get sick.
Maybe there are some fisheries that are a bit unscrupulous and carry tainted product but from what I have seen, the Asian seafood seems to be ok.

BFred--I think it's the Chinese seafood practices that are sub-par. Japan might be totally different. I've never heard anything negative about the Japanese seafood, just Chinese seafood and fresh-water fish (like catfish). Just bad practices there, there don't seem to be any regulations.
Seems that there was quite a stir several years back about seafood from parts of Asia being grown in , what we would call, raw sewage ponds. I had thought that products from the offending nations was not allowed to be sold in the US.
As far as Catfish from over there, the Miss Delta catfish group has attempted to put a stop to the term "catfish" which comes from Vietnam , and possibaly some other countries. What they call catfish is not the same critter we know and love as catfish over here.
I say support the catfish farmers in Miss and Al and make sure , when you buy catfish, it is from around here.
As to Shoneys seafood buffett. I like it, and we go from time to time. Surprisingly, I like the one in Muscle Shoals better than the Florence one . They have GREAT frog legs.
