Are there any shooting ranges in Colbert Co. other than the one near Coon Dog Cemetary? I have heard of one in Sheffield, but it is suppose to be very exclusive-police and big wigs only. I was using the one near Coon Dog Cemetary, but you can't use it during hunting season. Does anyone know of any that can be used all year long?
I probably needed to post this in the sports section, but I am learning to shoot and protect myself and family, because of the direction this war is taking and that is going to be our own backyard.

I disagree with half of your reasons for learning to shoot, but Larrys Pistol and Pawn is the only indoor range I have found in the area. It is ok, they limit double taps and no full auto toys but do provide a safe range with a rangemaster You can look them up for directions. Its off of Memorial Parkway

I thought TVA had a shooting range they opened up to the public on certain days??? I am not sure about that though.

We used to go out in the country and practice, but I had to stop shooting since my accident/disability.

Kindred, it is the Freedom Hills WMA, but you can't use it during hunting season.
Heub, I respect your right to disagree and maybe this war won't come to that, but I feel safer knowing that I can protect myself. And I really enjoy shooting, I'm working on hitting that bull's eye 100% of the time.

Thank you, Yankeewitch Smiler
There's a state management area over between Decatur and Athens called Swan Creek that has an area open year round to the public as a shooting range. I've been there years ago, but not directly there from the Shoals...I always went with a buddy from his house in Decatur.

The range in Sheffield is a private, membership only, for profit range. There is a IDPA match there the third Saturday of each month that does not require membership to shoot...but that's just for the IDPA match...not casual plinking.

I salute you for wanting to become more proficient with a firearm. The better people can protect themselves, the harder it is on criminals.
there is one out on county line road in leighton, approximately 1/2 mile south of 6th st. Its on the west side of the county line road and is way on the backside of the cotton field. You'll see a really long dirt road that cuts up the middle of the field. Just follow the road and youll get there. The last time I was out there it was accessible by 4 x 2 vehicle. I'm not sure if shooting is permited out there anymore but it use to be a pretty nice range back in the day. Has concrete slabs at the 25 and 15 yard marks and also supports. Might take a drive out there and see what it looks like now. Its been prolly 6 years since I've been back there.

As for the sheffield range, you have to be a member of a shotting club I belive. But you can go to the Sheffield Police Dept. and speak to Capt. Jones. Hes the range master, and is responsible for giving out the firing range applications. You might even be able to get your on key, depending on your connections.

PS I can appriciate your desire to be a good shooter. I do encourage you to get your wife involved and atleast make her semi-familiar with firearms, and especially the one she might be using in time of need. Good Luck, and most of all please stress firearm safety to your family and stress what firearms are for. There not toys, although kids seem to think they are.

I am the WIFE, my husband is already very proficient with firearms and he has taught our 6 sons to be accurate shots, too. I was the last hold out, but now I won't be happy until I can be just as good.

Protect-n-Serve, It sounds like you are describing the shooting range in Leighton that I had to go to to pass my gun safety class. I thought it was only used for that, I didn't think it was open to the public.

Isn't there a big new PRO BASS SHOP type store that has opened in Huntsville (on 231 north) that has an archery and shooting range?

Gander Mountain has opened in the old Sam's Club building on North Parkway. I'd heard about an indoor archery range, but not a firearms range.
