Look at the map in the 48 report--top right is the building where I took most of my classes. I sincerely hope none of those killed were anyone that I know--I would doubt it.

I think of shooters as those who have an external locus of control. This woman should have felt she had many options. Why is her husband in custody? Was he at the meeting?

I graduated from UNA first many years ago, so I never felt that close to anything at UAH--not exactly a hockey fan either, but this is gut-wrenching to say the least.
I just read on the WHNT site that Dr. Amy Bishop taught Anatomy and Physiology. That is a two semester course and is a GER (general education requirement) for nursing students. That means her current students, at least many of them, were about to enter the UAH nursing program. (I took my A&P at Calhoun--thanks, Mr. Russell.)

How can a person who has the intelligence, fortitude, and drive to get a doctorate just decide to shoot everything in sight? I've had many friends who stopped at a Masters Degree just because they didn't want to go through the grueling oral exams. Yet this lady did, and was hired at UAH. She could have gotten a job almost any where--why throw her life away?

I saw many drop out of the nursing program after 9/11 and I'm willing to bet many of Dr. Bishop's students do also...
It has been reported by every news broadcast both local and national that the reason for shooting was "TENURE". Does this not ell education experts something about this awful rule? I feel only sadness and concern for all of the victims and their families. We need to keep them all in our prayers. Yes, prayers; even if you don't beleive in it.

I have several relatives that are in Education or retired from positions in Education. Tenure is a double-edged sword at best. Good teachers and individuals are protected and bad ones also.
The protection kind of comes from the fact they we hire or elect our administrators. If it were not for Tenure they could hire and fire or harass at will. Tenure helps in that way by protection for good employees. It also helps to keep inept bullies and unqualified employees. Who has an answer? Teacher unions keep down ways to test teachers and qualify them for certain jobs. Could teach English for 15 yrs and then teach Math after that, qualified or not. Tough call for an answer.
Latest word on this alleged killer is that back in the late 1980s, she "accidentally" killed her own brother with a shotgun. The police chief in the town where this occurred says they can not find the records at this time but will keep looking and perhaps re-evaluate the incident.

A degree from Harvard is no guarantee that the degreed person will have all the necessary skills to teach at the university level. One would conclude that in terms of academic attainment, Ms. Bishop had demonstrated her competence. Whether she had developed emotional maturity and interpersonal skills is something quite different and thus far there is insufficient information from which to even speculate on these factors. It will all come out eventually, though.

So you think only dumb or uneducated people can kill? Roll Eyes

I'm not quite sure how you inferred that from my post. People who have what it takes to obtain a doctorate have an internal locus of control. A setback, no matter how large a one, should not deter such a person. If UAH didn't want her, many other institutions did.

If you have read any of the background on this woman and her husband, you would know that they have just recently perfected a replacement for the old-fashioned petri dish. Their brain child might not make as much as a better light bulb, but the revenue it will produce should have set them for life. In other words, she didn't need the job for the salary or the prestige. Obviously, she does have mental problems.

I inferred it because you said she had "intelligence, fortitude, and drive" as though she was above murder, & God's own brain child.
Mental problems? Obviously! She killed once, now she's killed again.

chick, it seems to me that FV was just asking how someone obviously intelligent could, with premeditation, do something so stupid. I wonder the same thing.

tomfan, I realize that. My point was that I don't understand how anyone can kill, intelligent or un-intelligent.
