The forum I referenced is on a different platform than your forum.

Jugflier, this is not from the Haven, which uses forumotion. The forum you spoke of uses FreeForums. That is where I got the following, the support section of FreeForums, where Admins and Mods go for answers to questions...

From http://support.freeforums.org/...vate+message#p368134 ...

Re: can I track members?

Good day.

No, there is no way to do this. This would require the ability to read PMs, and that is something we don't support for privacy reasons.

What your friend told you is not possible. It's just not. He or she really is mistaken.

Since you were wrong about the PMs, it would be wise to doubt your other claims. Sorry, but you put yourself in that position.
Joy, that's ok. You can easily investigate my other claims and verify them. It seems more and more evident to me you are protecting someone.

Administration Control Panel

At this forum where I am a mod, I found an interesting panel. It allows me to look at all the profiles of the members of the board and their PM's
So it seems that your info is faulty.

Now, niters all.

Now you know. Smiler

This is it is b & w, Jug. Not the little sentence you just posted. You can't read PM on FreeForums. Period. Joy was trying to help, but she's too nice for this forum.

Hello there ET. Been banned but back again. Getting bored with that goofy blog you and the other girls write? Have you and shoalanda picked out your matching Easter dresses yet?

Our goofy blog had 8K page hits last week. How about the BOS?

That wasn't my info. It came from FreeForums. They wrote the software & say there is no way to see PMs.
Dont waste your time, Joy, I have asked him multiple times to provide links to discussions he claims we have had. If he claims that they exist, I sure shouldnt have to go looking for them. And it should not be hard for him to find them in his history (unless he cant remember which id he is talking about or he no longer has access to that id because it has been banned) and post us a link to them.

He'll probably try to post some mess like he did above. I have a video game that has an 'Administration Control Panel'.

Just because you irritated the stew out of me, I kept digging. It turns out that in order to acquire the ability to read PMs, you have to upgrade to Advanced Hosting, which the forum you accused does NOT have. FreeForums refuses to install it for moral and legal reasons. You can get phpBB to install it or install it yourself, but must upgrade to Advanced Hosting, which is costly.

So, on what forum do you moderate? They were willing to disregard warnings that this is unethical as well as could result in legal issues and install such a feature anyway?

I didn't set the forum up. I was just asked to be a mod. I have trouble restarting a computer, I had to hunt and hunt and hunt. It's called a User Control Panel. At this panel I can see all the information on an individual member, including any PM's. No I didn't look at any, but it gave me the option.

I'm with you, I don't like it. Don't think it should be there. But it does show that on some forums it is available.

Just not on the one you accused of doing it, as they do not have Advanced Hosting. Installing that option to read PMs is a very deliberate thing & anyone who does so knows it is unethical. You have to admit it ironic that the forum on which you moderate is who should have received your accusations.

Oh well. At least we've increased our knowledge.

If one has it, they all have it. I'm sure that they are not going to admit to the public that their PM's can be read. It's like the government doesn't tell you everything they do.

The CIA runs drugs topay for their operations so they don't have to report to congress their actions. They are involved in assasinations of world leaders, the creation of insurrections in sovereign nations, and if necessary, they can start a war.
All these things are illegal accordingto our laws. They do it anyway, and you'll never know all they do because you are not on the inside.

Free Forums can do whatever they please, they are only as good as the character of the people who run it. I don't know them, do you?
No hard feelings and no offense intended.

The bottom line is that info has to be stored somewhere. As long as that's the case, there will always be a way to retrieve it. Granted it is more difficult in some cases than others.

I always tell people to look at "private messages" like notes passed in a quiet room. They're really meant to allow you to carry on an off-topic discussion without clogging up the main board with conversations of no interest to the general reader. Just as you wouldn't pass a note with your banking account info across a room of strangers, you probably should not discuss anything sensitive using the "private" message feature of an online forum.
