...is not completely true. There's not that much money to be made unless one is already is the waste collection business.

I would only support mandatory recycling if I had curb-side recycling.
We have curb side where I live and I recycle greater than 50% of our trash. I agree, if we did not have curb side, that number would most likely be 0% recycled.
I had heard a while back that there was legislation being introduced by someone (can't remember who) to cut down on the junk mail like sales papers, etc. we all receive and don't want. That stuff takes up a large portion of landfills in this country. I'm sure several retail associations killed it, though, because I haven't heard anything else about it.
The only thing that bothers me more than this is seeing perfectly beautiful landscapes strip-malled - which has come to almost a halt since the recession and the realization of the retailers that they had overbuilt. But I digress. I grew up in the country surrounded by plenty of trees and a creek and don't have much of an appreciation for concrete jungles, I guess. And I'm not convinced that "climate change" does or does not exist or, if it does, that humans are responsible for it, but I do know we should do a better job of protecting our planet.

I am not in favor of publicly owned waste management services. They really should all be privatized. If this happened, I would have no problem with, and fully support, companies charging a premium for the convenience of not recycling.

The last time I sold scrap metal(recycled) I got nearly $900 for a Saturday morning's work.
Offenders took advantage of container recycling redemption program and there are some states who become victim of these criminals. Yearly, millions are lost to recycling fraud in state of California, Maine and Michigan as criminals unlawfully cash in recyclable containers. Look no further, all of the info you'll need is at Match Financial.
No problem with recycling, I do so now in Florence. However, its the mandatory I object to. For glass, there is only a small market. A company in Huntsville tried. They had a good product, bit no market and went broke.
As to those demanding mandatory recycling -- I'm avoiding soylent green.
yes for mandatory re-cycling. a czar or two would be needed to enforce it. New laws, fines, beatings of non-compliant citizenry ; I can see many jobs with retirement benefits created.
