Sidewalks in Muscle Shoals

At least Muscle Shoals is getting lots of sidewalk, Florence has never built any new sidewalks that I have heard about even tho they are required now for all new businesses and sub-divisions. Of course the city is not paying for them.  Someone with the resources and know how should really investigate the city of Florence and what is happening to all the tax money taken in. Something is not right with the cities finances. Muscle Shoals growing as fast as weeds grow in a yard and you look at Florence and all you see are dead weeds. What is wrong with the leaders of the city and county, it looks like the county is going to refuse to give the tax abatement to the solar panel company wanting to build out around hwy 20. I don't think the county or city wants any new business at all to come to Florence.

Didn't Florence built a sidewalk near Cherry Hill homes and the liquor store on Florence Blvd?

There are many Senior citizens living on the West side of Woodward which is the side of Woodward Walmart is on. Many of these Senior citizens attempt to walk to Walmart for groceries and other items and are forced to walk in the streets because the sidewalks that Henry Ford installed are in terrible condition and most have been completely removed because of home construction. This is a disgrace for the city of Muscle Shoals who has been installing these sidewalks for years now.

LOL! Are these the same streets where traffic is almost non-existent? Seems like a pretty long haul to wally world for a 'senior' even if there was a sidewalk.  How many seniors would  be using the sidewalks? Sounds like someone wants the city to **** away a lot of money on something no one really needs, or just wants to gripe.

Many cities require new construction to build a sidewalk in front of the establishment or housing. Then, the city will maintain it. Madison and Huntsville have patches of sidewalk to nowhere.

Those old sidewalks build by Henry Ford used to make quail hunting quite convenient.

No clue gingee from cali? Just the clue I got from being born and raised in the Shoals area. Very familiar with the area. We've always had friends and family there, they are still there, lived in MSC for a few months, we own property there, and we visit once or twice a month. How often do you trek in from cali? I bet we know more about the area then you'll ever know.

The state built those sidewalks after the overpass was built as required by federal law

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I think the city limits of MS extend to just the other side of the RR tracks, Maybe this is a problem that should be addressed to Sheffield. 
Instead of ranting about sidewalks, (and I do agree that they should be put in city wide), how bout we all address the train tracks in both Sheffield and Muscle Shoals  ?  There seems to be a lot of ignorance on the part of ALDOT, but there is hope. Just 30 miles to the West is a small town that has both a rr overpass, and an underpass, and another 20 miles West, there is a town with more RR underpasses than I can add up sitting right here, and a few overpasses for good measure. 
Maybe , since the ALDOT is so damm stupid on how tracks can be overpassed, or underpassed, they could send a delegation to those two towns and see how it can be done. 
Even tho it seems to be a non issue for Flotown people, helping any one of the cities in the Quad Cities area, helps us all. We should ALL raise hell until both those RR tracks do not have to be crossed by cars any more.

I meant that the RR tracks in MS, (on Avalon) and Sheffield (on Montgomery) should have either an overpass or an underpass so that car tires do not have to "touch" the RR tracks. 
There are other alternatives for this such as re-routing train traffic South of both crossings, like south of hwy 72/20 , but that has problems as well. 
I think at one time, when trains pulled 10 or 15 cars, these crossings were fine, but now , with coal trains miles long, and the speed limit for trains in metropolitan areas, it's just time to do something positive.
Downtown Sheffield has come a long way in upgrading it's buildings and businesses, but it still has a long way to go, and not having the irritation of having to wait out the trains would be a boon to the city.

A method over or under those tracks would certainly be helpful.  However, I've sat at those tracks for decades.  If, 10 to 15 cars crossed, it was part of the local rail yard forming a consist.  The last time there were only 10 to 15 cars on most long distance trains, they were just replacing the Conestoga wagon.

It's true the RR has taken advantage of interstate commerce laws. But a

over or bypass would draw complaints from businesses. A overpass might

be located away from Montgomery so as not to direct business away from

downtown very far. It's an expensive problem.

I have ridden the Tennessean, (night train) and the day train that did not pull much over 6 or 8 cars over those same tracks.
In the days of steam trains, 10 or so cars would have been a considerable load unless the engine was an eight wheel driver. The older ones with 4 or 6 wheel likely weren't that long.
I'm guessing all that was long before you were a twinkle in your daddy's eye, but I actually remember before trains were miles long.

Maybe. Go West young Jack, Go West and see how the problem is handled in the big cities like Iuka and Corinth. Maybe someday this little country town we call Sheffield will grow up and learn . 
Not that they would ever been seen again, but I would really like to see public transportation in the form of either trolleys or trackless trolleys  with connections throught the area, but like I said , that is most likely only a pipe dream.

When the industry dried up in the area is when Sheffield went on life

support. Doesn't seem to be coming back.

Have you been in Sheffield lately?  There is a lot of construction and new shops and cafes opening.

Have to admit I avoid Sheffield now, and have for years. Used to go there and even worked in a little mini-mart there when I was "coming up", and got my fill of it. They'll have to go a long way to knock out the depressing feel of the place. It's OK until you cross the tracks.
