Snowden has political asylum, can stay in Russia for a year, lawyer says

National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden's application for political asylum has been approved, and he has left a Moscow airport, Russian lawyer Anatoly Kucherena told CNN on Thursday.

Snowden has legal status in Russia for one year, Kucherena said, but the attorney would not disclose his location, citing security reasons.

On Wednesday night, a lawyer representing Lon Snowden, Edward Snowden's father, appeared on "Anderson Cooper 360" and said that Snowden wasin good health in Russia and that his lawyer was open to hammering out an ending that would satisfy all.

Attorney Bruce Fein relayed the conversation he had Kucherena.

"There may be a time, where it would be constructive to try and meet and see whether there can't be common ground that everyone agrees would advance the interest, the United States, Mr. Snowden, Lon, his father, and the interest of Russia in trying to resolve this in a way that honors due process and the highest principles of fairness and civilization," Fein said.

Kucherena earlier told Russian news agency Itar-Tass that he'd start working on Lon Snowden's visa application.

"I telephoned him (Edward Snowden) today. We agreed that I would prepare an invitation for his father to visit Russia. I hope that the visa formalities will not be long," Kucherena said Wednesday.

Snowden has said he is afraid he would not get a fair trial if he came back to the United States.

How could a high school dropout and military reject get a top secret clearance?  He worked for a contractor, how much profit did the contractor make on his $122,000 salary?  Why is a temporary employee placed in a position like he had?

He is a traitor and enemy spy.  Some of the republican pin heads are calling him a hero.  They are as big a national security risk as Snowden is.

Former President Jimmy Carter announced support for NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden this week, saying that his uncovering of the agency's massive surveillance programs had proven "beneficial."

at this particular period in time when we badly need the presidents stimulus for jobs in the budget passed I see no difference in snowden and bug-eyed mccornnell and boner. Traitors the lot of'em.

the lackys that make up their constituency are not innocent. boner and mccornell need to be shackled and frog-walked to the yard-arm

Snowden's first revelation about the scope of spying on US citizens had some merit.  He should have sent his info to Rand Paul and a couple of other libertarian minded congressmen (legal under the whistle blower law).  Then, skedaddled to Iceland, if he feared jail.  After he revealed US actions against other nations and spend time with the Chinese and Russians, they know what he knows and the real treason began.

As to his education, he's an IT type.  While not finishing high school is unusual, a number of them gain expertise by self education, then obtaining certifications on Microsoft and other systems.  Those certification programs are hard.

How he obtained a clearance and a job at the NSA and, earlier, the CIA is beyond me.  That he could walk off with all that information revealed serious weaknesses in the systems' internal controls.
