Yesterday I passed by the old Backyard Burger's location in Florence just after the O'Neil Bridge. It was about 12:30pm yesterday. There were 3 different people in suits checking the place out. There were 2 very well distinguished looking men looking at the drive thru sign. A very well dressed woman had what appeared to be a very expensive digital video camera and was taking video of BYB sign by the road.

All the Cullman/Hwy 157 restaurants are very successful.  They're a big crossroads location --high traffic.

The franchise fees, occupancy expense and working capital required to run a Backyard Burger are too high to bring much success.  Only the best stores at great locations will survive.  Zaxby's could be successful in downtown Florence--they do a great job.

I just think it's terrible that there's little low cost food in the UNA/Downtown area.  Other than a Subway, about the only fast food is N. Florence McDonalds, Florence Blvd. Jacks.  Only 1 gas station in downtown?   College students are big eaters of cheap food.

It's bad enough that there are no honky tonks in Florence--with food sales having to exceed beer sales.  It's almost enough to drive one to another college--in a town with more personality.  At least Gainesville, FL has $2.50 pitchers every Friday afternoon--and a good time for all  48K students.  College students are big beer drinkers--needless to say.

I had heard that Fatboy's building was renting for $5,000 a month a while back and I always thought man that would have to be a lot of burgers sold what with the cost of utilities and labor cost.

I guess I just didn't realize that restaurants lay down that kind of cash monthly for rent. I was sorta floored. While I can see McDonald's and a few others having no problem with it I can also see why so many others who aren't a huge corporation go under.

And just how many of those "all 48K students" are under the legal drinking age?

Looks like you will have to go to the Cullman location if you want one of their burgers again. They have no plans on coming back to Florence that we know of. The building is up for rent as of right now. Will be nothing new to report really that I see.
