Suspect in shooting two Louisiana police officers dies

(Reuters) - A man suspected of wounding two Louisiana police officers in an exchange of gunfire early on Saturday in front of his home has died of injuries sustained in the gunfight, Baton Rouge police said on Sunday.

The suspect, who police identified as Calvin Smith, 22, of Baton Rouge, died on Saturday night at a local hospital, police said in a statement.

Police said Smith fled in his car from officers who were responding to a report of a disturbance involving property damage, then pulled off the road in front of his home about 2 miles (3 km) away, got out of the vehicle and fired several shots at the officers with a rifle.

Grandma who ran nine-year-old to death for lie about candy dies in prison

An Alabama woman, convicted of capital murder for making her nine-year-old granddaughter run for hours as punishment for lying about candy, died on Friday less than a year into her life-without-parole sentence for the killing.

Joyce Hardin Garrard, 50, died five days after being stricken at the state’s women’s prison, said a prison spokesman, Bob Horton.

The cause of death was not immediately available, but defense attorney Dani Bone said Garrard apparently suffered a heart attack on Sunday minutes after relatives visited her at the state women’s prison. She was taken from the prison by helicopter ambulance to a Montgomery hospital where she was placed on life support and eventually died.

We will have to wait to see if this one has the out come it should have, but it's off to a good start. Send him to jail so he can hear someone else tell him to do what he told the judge she could do!

Drug Dealer Who Berated Judge On Facebook After Avoiding Jail Gets Called Back To Court

A drug dealer who told a judge to go “suck his ****” after escaping jail has been ordered back to court, and now faces resentencing.

Daniel Sledden, 27, was given a suspended sentence by Judge Beverley Lunt at Burnley Crown Court after pleading guilty to selling cannabis.

But moments after the decision, he launched a bizarre attack on her in a Facebook post.

“Cannot believe my luck 2 year suspended sentence beats the 3 year jail yes pal! Beverly Lunt go suck my ****,” he wrote.

His brother, Samuel, who had also pleaded guilty to dealing drugs, replied to the post to say they “wouldn’t get the chance again.”

They have now both been ordered back to the court.

The Latest: Texas inmate executed for killing store clerk

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) — The Latest on the execution of a Texas inmate sentenced to death for the 1990 killing of a Dallas-area liquor store clerk during a robbery (all times local):

6:30 p.m.

A Texas prisoner has been executed for the shotgun slaying of a Dallas-area liquor store clerk during a robbery more than 25 years ago.

Gustavo Garcia's lethal injection Tuesday was the third this year in Texas, which carries out capital punishment more than any other state. The 43-year-old Garcia was 18 at the time of the killing.

Garcia was sentenced to death for fatally shooting 43-year-old Craig Turski during a December 1990 holdup in Plano. It was one of two robbery-slayings linked to Garcia and another teenager in the Dallas suburb.

Garcia's attorneys made no late legal attempts to stop the execution after the U.S. Supreme Court's refusal last week to rehear an appeal. A federal judge also wouldn't halt it, and the Texas parole board refused a clemency petition.

No last-day appeals have been filed on behalf of a Texas inmate who faces execution for the 1990 killing of a Dallas-area liquor store clerk.

Gustavo Garcia refused to eat breakfast Tuesday but did visit with family members and friends. He was transferred midday from a prison that houses death row to Huntsville, where executions are carried out.

He was moved to a small holding cell outside the death chamber to await his scheduled lethal injection. Prison officials described the 43-year-old as calm.

Garcia was sentenced to death for the fatal shooting of Craig Turski during a robbery in Plano.

His execution would be the third this year in Texas, which carries out capital punishment more than any other state.

Attorneys for a Texas inmate facing execution for the shotgun slaying of a suburban Dallas liquor store clerk say no late appeals are planned.

Gustavo Garcia's lethal injection scheduled for Tuesday evening would be the third this year in Texas, which carries out capital punishment more than any other state.

The 43-year-old Garcia was sentenced to death for the fatal 1990 shooting of Craig Turski during a robbery.

The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles rejected a clemency petition and a federal judge considering an appeal Friday refused to halt the execution. The U.S. Supreme Court has also declined to review Garcia's case.
