Has anyone noticed what is in the food bags at the front entrance of Southern Family Markets. These bags are supposed to be given to the needy. Customers are asked to donate money to pay for these bags. I looked at the list of contents and the bag contain the following: 1 box of crackers, 1 box of macaroni & cheese, 1 can of green peas, 1 can of vienna sausage and a can of diced tomatoes? My jaw dropped when I read the list...and all bags had the same thing in them! Do they think this is what a person would eat for a Thanksgiving dinner? Sounds like they had an overrun on the items and needed to get rid of them. It is fine to donate them to the needy, but not as "a Holiday type thing" People would probably be more willing to donate items that would actually be used in preparing a traditional Thanksgiving meal than give one of those bags to someone.

Buy your food at Dollar General or Fred's and run it by one of the centers who offer help to the needy. I always try to include items like beef stew or tuna for those who do not feel like cooking - or even heating. Also canned fruit for a treat and instant coffee. Fred's is a good source this ad period. Beware of items you can't see.
