After nearly a week of controversy, a new restaurant is set to open this week in the former barbeque restaurant in Spring Park in Tuscumbia. The name of the restaurant is Lan Yapp Cajun Smoke House, featuring barbeque, Cajun dishes and other items. I’ve spoken with the owners and the menu sound inviting. I’ll just have to wait and sample some of the food items, prior to giving it my thumbs up.

First I would like to thank everyone for the support we are getting, everyone seems to be really excited about us opening. The name of our little place is called Lan-Yapp's Bobby wanted to change it so that it is pronounced the way it sounds. I still can't say it like he does Smiler.
Dark Vader however did spell it right.
We are going to start off with Summer hours for now, 9am till 9pm seven days a week. We will be open tomorrow and will be serving Chicken and Sausage Gumbo, and a Shrimp dish that my friends and family love. And of course BBQ, Hamburger ....etc. I'm not really sure if I can post my menu on here, so I am gonna finish and say Thanks to everyone hope to see you all soon .
HomeTownGirl! I'm so excited for y'all and for all of us...lol...we will make a point to come see you. The husband loves barbecue and I love Cajun & Spring Park.

You are brave souls to open in this economy, but I just can't see how this place can be anything but a success. You have 'location, location, location' on your side & the menu, IMO, sounds perfect. Add clean & good service to that & it'll be a hit. Good luck!!!

Hey, will you be able to accommodate a big group, like for a family reunion?

I do not consider myself cultured, but I do know how Lagniappe is supposed to be spelled.

And any place that refers to their selves as 'Lan-Yapp', screams hillbilly nonsense.

A cajun BBQ place sounds awesome, but that name, with that spelling, could definitely be improved on.

Oh yeah.. almost forgot. Stinky, what controversy are you talking about? Fill us in.
The bulk of my business deals with consulting individuals and businesses in adequate fire and life safety issues from alarm systems, sprinklers, emergency systems, etc A lot of my clients are involved in restaurants, bars, and other types of assembly occupancies. So with that said, I encounter all types of issues of people being misinformed of the requirements for construction, modification, remodeling, etc. ,which means that I deal with code and building officials on a local and state level all the time.

This project was stopped by such an official who in the case was the deputy state fire marshal, because it did not meet the minimum requirements for a commercial cooking operation. The owners of the restaurant were not properly informed of the minimum requirements by the person and/or persons whom they had been in communication with, including some of the officials representing the City of Tuscumbia; the person and/or their representative whom they leased the building from.

I tell people all of the time, before you start spending your money especially on a restaurant, bar, club, etc, you need to contact both the health department and fire marshal, as both can really make the project go smother. And when you don’t, you can expect to pay someone like me to make it right when they refuse to permit you or issue a certificate of occupancy.
Thanks Stinky... Sounds like the deputy fire marshal was being extremely thorough. Hasn't there been a restaurant in there before? Sparky's?

And willie, please diagram the sentence in my post and clarify where the breakdown in grammar took place. You can't.... cuz there ain't nerrn wrong with it.

But seriously though... grow a pair and learn how to properly rebut someone, rather than being a flag throwing grammar nazi who doesn't even know what they're talking about.

At least I started my sentences with capital letters.

Oooooooooooooooooooooooo burnnnnnnnnnnn.

Lame @ss dork.
Well, in an attempt to bring this back on subject...lol...you guys are likely pretty busy right now, but just whenever you find time to get on here, I really would like to know about the large group thing. Smiler

My previous post...no quote function in this section for some reason...

We went today and the food was fantastic! The gumbo and red beans and rice were awesome. The bread pudding was okay. The only down side was no seating. We did sit at a picnic table and the owner said he was going to build a lean-to style bar area where people can sit. We will definitely go back and I will stop by and take gumbo home on my way home from work. Wink
I tried it today for lunch. On a scale of 1-5 with 5 being the best, I give the overall experience a 3 for my first visit and the fact of no dinning room or tables was not a factor in my findings.

The barbeque was (heat hot) from being cooked or prepped and servings large. The sandwich was meat on bun, no slaw or anything added. I found it good, but not enough for me to swap from my local favorite barbeque establishment. The flavor was nice, but over powering as with others in the area.

My experience was that it’s definitely not car food, but more of something you pick-up and take with you to a near by picnic table, office or home. This is not a place that I would take my family as they are overly fond of this type of food. I would like to see that menu expanded a little more and maybe an option for smaller sides i.e. 4 oz. that can be mixed.

I was tempting to try the barbeque chicken plate today, however, time/scheduling prevented it. Another patron ordered one and it smelled wonderful. Maybe the next time I will.
First of all, lets start with the name. Lan Yap. Do the owners think we are so stupid we don't recognize the word lagniappe when we see it? If you don't know, a lagniappe is a gratuity the merchant gives to the customer. If you are looking for a lagniappe, don't go to Lan Yap. I ordered a BBQ sandwich, a soft drink, and a side of potato salad. The total came to nearly nine bucks and they didn't even throw in a napkin. I WATCHED the cook pull the BBQ out of a bag, (Think Bishops BBQ - yeah, ick) throw it in the wave, nuke it, and then slap it on the bun along with a smattering of slaw. All I have good to say about that sandwich is that the bun was fresh.
The potato salad was the worst I've ever had in my life. It looked more like the filling for deviled eggs than potato salad as no actual chunks of potato were recognizable whatsoever. Utter, eggy mush. And all that for 9 bucks.

While I was there, several other people walked up and I heard later they waited 45 minutes for mediocre food. 45 minutes? Is that how long it took them to run to the Texaco to get some chicken to resell to the poor patrons who waited for nearly an hour?

The owner barked loudly about how "fresh" everything was but I've had fresher food in a hospital cafeteria.

Don't expect any lagniappes from Lan Yap. Better yet, don't expect Lan Yap to still be in Spring Park come this fall.
