Exactly why did we have to pass it before the end of the year? Russia is not in any hurry. So much for another one of Obama's 'got to' measures.

MOSCOW — Russia's lower house of parliament on Friday gave preliminary approval to a U.S.-Russian arms treaty, but decided to delay the final vote until next month.

The Kremlin-controlled State Duma voted 350-58 to approve the New START treaty in the first of three required readings. The legislators said they would proceed further after returning from the New Year's vacation that lasts until Jan. 11.

Konstantin Kosachev, the head of the State Duma's foreign affairs committee, said the full ratification could only happen next month "at the earliest."

Nope, like most things, Republicans filibusterered almost everything. Sen Kyle I believe was the one who wanted payback in the form of a few percentage points on the inheritance tax rates.
Still, Kyle and McConald both voted against the treaty. It would appear they would like to ramp up the cold war again, my guess is that it is profitable for some of the companies in the Military Industrial Complex and they must be their biggest benefactors.
What other reason could anyone have ?
Our current President said he would get rid of our missile defense system and now he’s doing it. Putting the United States in a real dangerous situation. There is no doubt this a bad treaty for the USA. Andrew C. McCarthy wrote in the National Review Online:

President Obama is writing to the wrong people, and those wrong people are hopelessly confused about his power and their own. This is how bad agreements are born.
Senate Republicans could easily kill the wayward New START treaty, and tell the administration to go back to Moscow and cut a deal that promotes American national security. The Constitution disfavors treaties that are not patently in U.S. interests, requiring a two-thirds Senate majority for approval — seven more than the 60-vote threshold generally required to move any contentious legislation through the upper chamber.

Republicans are helping to get this done, and that’s a shame.
