Heaven a fairy story says guy that can't touch his own junk.

British scientist Stephen Hawking has branded heaven a "fairy story" for people afraid of the dark, in his latest dismissal of the concepts underpinning the world's religions.

Jenn, are you agreeing that heaven is a fairy story for those afraid of the dark?

Like I said for a scientist to go there is stupid and out of his expertise.

If he can use imaginary numbers to support a theory that cannot be demonstrated experimentally then what is his beef about the prospect of heaven.

And don’t invoke the LHC as being able to prove the big bang. I happen to know better.

Funny, Jennifer, I didn't see anything here that suggested people were making fun of his illness. All I saw were people saying that he is a great scientist who is out of his element when talking about spiritual matters.

I personally think he is a great man, but although he is a genius, that doesn't make him wise. As another great man once said, "Information is not knowledge. Knowledge is not wisdom..."

Anger issues...

You know cage I myself have wondered what is the real source of these anger issues.

Jenn is pizzed off about something.

Jenn you tried your best to blame the recent storm damage on mean ole god.

Maybe we can get together somewhere and help you out what ever it is.

You seem intelligent but good grief you have got the worse case of the ill tail I’ve seen lately.

We ain’t gonna bite you.

That statement is in error.

Maybe you can't understand it, but man probably eventually will. If he can shake off the superstitions that hold him back and keep him ignorant.

The paragon of Christian decency, Ronnie P., started this thread by saying, "Heaven a fairy story says guy that can't touch his own junk." Funny that no Christian has apparently noticed or admonished the OP for such a stupid statement and instead blame an atheist for having the decency to point it out.

I believe that you and others maybe didn't notice, and yet considering the crude source for this thread I'd like to think that at least one believer would have noticed and said something. A minor example, but funny nonetheless the things we don't notice or object to depending on which side of the fence we're on.

Nah, I have learned to ignore MOST of what Ronnie says. That's why I saw the title and skipped immediately to the link.

Nope poor road puppy, man will never know. Physical laws prohibit us from knowing.

I’m going to ask God first thing.

As a matter-to-fact; man cannot even explain why it's dark at night for sure.

Hawking's comment reflects on the nature of the soul.  The soul is not contained within the spark of life, it is the unique collection of experiences, opinions, values, emotions, knowledge, desires, and other human intellectual qualities that reside in the mind.

When the brain is damaged, those qualities change.  So why is it unthinkable that when the brain dies, the soul ceases to exist?

The Hindus crave non-existence.  They consider themselves cursed with indefinite reincarnations until they finally get it right, and reach Nirvana, a condition of non-existence.

I rather imagine Hawkins is right, as he is so often.  Yet another reason to embrace reality and the gift of existence here and now, and not live for an afterlife that is highly improbable.

DF

Hawking’s analogy that the brain is a computer is flawed to the core; that simply means he is talking out his azz and understands very little about the brain. Definitely not mans relationship to God. Just because Hawking has no place for God and therefore he doesn’t exist is meaningless.

Hawking is a very smart dude and I admire him but he has his limits.

i'd also like to point out, hawkings has never talked about how wise he was, and rarely does he speak to his cognative powers.

we, the people, at least the ones who aren't blinded by our own holy light, regard him as wise and learned and hyperintelligent.

he's likely owner of the most powerful brain since einstein hissownself.

he simply uses his (ahem) god given gift as best as he's able, while the rest of us wait for the book to come out so we can read it slowly so we cna figure out what he's talking about.

So.. in short.. once again, bill got it dead wrong.

i'm mostly acctually the same way, DD..

except i try to make sue i use the same tactics they use.

when someone says to me " i believe, or i think.." then they get my respect for their opinion, even if my own opinion differs.

but often someone, especally bill gray will not present a topic as ' i believe' but as the god given gospel, handed down form on high, and any who disagree are hellbound.

if you disagree with bill gray, you are wrong, and doomed. just ask him.

there are others in the athiest camp that jump up just as snotty, at times, as bill does. not as often as bill, but it's still pretty arrogant when someone says ' this is the truth, and if you don't agree you are delusional" when they have no more solid proof than bill does.

but, you know, whatever. i'm still waiting for one side or the other to give us definitive demonstrable proof and settle it for once and for all. until they do, neither said can offer anything but opinion... they offer ' i believe' and ' i think' even when they try to pass it off as conclusive fact.

i have a feeling i'm going to be waiting for a long long time.

It is very simple. Science is fact based. Religion is superstition based. No need for belief in science. Religion can't exist without blind faith, and the key word is blind.

Yes Winston very true very true.

Your statement brings to mind how little we know about our nearest star the Sun let-a-lone the next one.

Science is supposed to be fact based.

It takes more faith to believe that the whole universe, space, and time popped out of nothing in an instant than it does to believe God made it.
