Assisted Suicide: A Christian Choice and a New Freedom

Do we honor the God of life by extending the length of our days when the quality of our life has dissipated? Is a breathing cadaver a witness to the God of life? Should powerful narcotics be used to lessen our pain and thus to extend our days even if they rob us of the relationships which give life its meaning?

If I have a medically-confirmed incurable disease, and can bear the pain of that sickness only by being placed into a kind of twilight zone, where I neither recognize the sweet smile of my wife nor respond to the touch of her hand, do I not have the ethical right to end my life with medical assistance? Can dedicated Christians step into this process and say we have now reached the point in human development where we have not just the right, but the moral obligation, to share life-and-death decisions with God? Do we not serve our deepest convictions if we decide to end our life at the moment in which its sacredness becomes compromised?

Death is not divine punishment endured because we are fallen people. Death is a natural part of life's cycle. It must, therefore, be embraced as something good--a friend, not an enemy. Can any of us really imagine life without death being a part of it? Far from being evil, death is simply that shadow which gives life its passion, its depth, its sense of urgency. Death walks with us from the moment we are born. It pressures life. It is that reality which makes life's experiences unrepeatable. Childhood lasts but a limited time. It should be neither rushed nor restrained. The same is true for our adolescence, adulthood, and every other identifiable stage of our lives. There is only one journey through the middle years, the aging process, and into old age itself. Each stage must be grasped with vigor.

Way to miss the point, O.

Atheists embrace life as much as any believer-maybe even more so because, not believing in an 'afterlife', atheists believe that death is final.

We're usually out celebrating this life while you're in church celebrating death. (all that kingdom come and stuff...)

I heard on the scanner- the police responding to a call about a guy out on the boat ramp on Second Creek Thanksgiving night.  Apparently he was attempting to drown himself.

Hmm... One of the 'christian majority', no doubt....  Go figure. Tryna git ta heaven?

One never knows.....DO one?

Um, Pup? Didn't you see the "razz-y face" I posted?

And don't be so sure people in Church are celebrating death. We celebrate LIFE, the one we have here and now, AND forever.

There was an article in the paper last week about how gratitude is one of the healthiest emotions we can feel. It supposedly even makes people live longer, and DEFINITELY makes a person feel better. Well, Christians are so full of thanks to God, it really brightens our lives and makes EVERYTHING better. When I wake up every morning I start a prayer before I have even opened my eyes, thanking Him for another day, for letting me live where I do, run the business that I do, for the family and loved ones I had, for the friends that I have, for the cat, the house, the car, and all the beautiful guitars. THEN I open my eyes, crawl out of bed, and go make coffee. And after that first sip, another little prayer of thanks goes up for the wonderful little things in life, like a cup of coffee, that make the world so beautiful.

How could anyone be in a bad mood after starting their day like that? And honestly, if you consider THAT "celebrating death", then I wish everyone would do it. There would be no more war if everyone started each day with such gratitude - gratitude for LIFE.

Do we dare hope???

Jennifer, after THAT remark, you should NEVER NEVER call a Christian or anyone ELSE mean spirited. I think everyone who reads this forum knows who you are talking about. Do you hate him that much that you "hope" he attempts suicide?! Yeah, you're a real sweetheart. You should be ASHAMED for wishing harm and despair on ANYONE, let alone someone on an internet forum. You say that nothing said here gets under your skin. And yet you wish this poster would attmpt to drown himself. I'm sorry, but you are lower than low. You disgust me.

Heheh. Posting logjam...

@Best: No, I don't hope. At least I didn't. Drowning's not a good way to go (well, NO way's a good way, I guess) at least up until ya get to the actual dying part....Then I understand it's quite pleasant-so says a friend of mine who did drown and was resuscitated. Up until that point-he said it hurt like hell.

I wouldn't wish that kinda pain and desperation on anybody (as if I could anyway...)

Oh shut up ono and go get some treatment for your cryabeetus. NO one is as mean as you.

Jennifer, you really ARE lower than low. So many people on this forum have told you you come across as bitter and hateful, but wishing attempted suicide on someone, then trying to fluff over it as if you had said nothing wrong just PROVES that you are the bitterest, most black hearted person to ever post on this or any other forum. How can you live with yourself?

Sure, feel free. Some of them just suffer from it and when they get a bad case of it they get to feeling real mean and then they start posting.

Bout as many that have told YOU how bitter and mean you are?  Now why don't you just run off and sit in a bucket of ice and cool off. Why do you even read my posts anyway? Seems to me they just get your blood pressure up. I don't mess with you or your threads so why do you have to always come running to mine to stir up crap?

You must be talking about yourself there, sweetie. I have never wished death and despair on ANYONE, not even someone like YOU, whom I despise.

Both of you are good people with opposite beliefs & I truly like both of you, very much.

I don't see an Atheist & I don't see a Christian. I see two people with good hearts.

O, I dunno how it is in yer neighborhood, but lotsa good people sometimes just hafta say 'doubleyou tee eff'

Most people-even hardened people wouldn't wish pain and despair and suffering on anybody-because they've usually experienced plenty of it themselves. I'm no exception.

Not saying some wouldn't deserve it, but in those cases-it's usually because the situation warrants it-as in the case of "Am I gonna eat it-Or is it gonna eat me?"  Then most folks would find themselves in a place where they'd suddenly hafta temporarily turn off the moral, emotional part of their brains and concentrate on survival.

Then again, mebbe it was just a potshot.

First off, to Pup. I like you & consider you my friend, so no offense intended.

O No, Pup mentioned a man that was attempting to drown himself, saying he was no doubt “One of the christian majority".

I think Pup was attempting to make a funny & Jenn was going along with the joke. Why would you get mad at her for saying what she did but not Pup for what he said? How is what she said any worse? Both were laughing at something he said.

One time, a very, very long time ago someone I know shot himself. He was aiming at his heart (he told me this after the fact) but missed & hit himself in the shoulder. This person had given me a lot of grief for several years. When he called me from the hospital wanting my sympathy, do you know what I told him?

I told him to put the gun in his mouth the next time & hung up on him. I wasn’t joking as Jenn was when she responded to Pup. I was serious & would not have shed one tear over this person.

Would you consider me, who would wish that kind of pain on that person, someone with a good heart?

To answer your question, yes, I do think Jenn has a good heart. She’s been good to me, just as you have. Anyone seeing your response to her, could possibly say you weren’t a Christian. Would they be correct?

I wouldn’t think it but then I know you on a personal level where some people that might think that don’t know you. All they see is your dislike of her & your response.

I sincerely hope you see the point I’m trying to make.

"I told him to put the gun in his mouth the next time & hung up on him."

Now THAT is cold-ass reality.  Gnomesayin'?  YOU  'get it'.

I dunno 'bout any forum poster hangin out on the dock. I never said anything to that effect.

My point, like Best's was to reiterate the "do as I say-Not as I do" mentality exhibited by many christians.

They preach about all kindsa stuff that's a 'see-yun', but then who do we find gambling? Drinking? Smoking? Screwing around on each other? Killing? Stealing? Lying? Trying to become (and sometimes succeeding at becoming) "an hero" by committing suicide?

Here's a hint-it ain't atheists. Not around here, by cracky.

You KNOW that guy on the boat ramp was a christian. Wottahell else around here woulda he been?

He hadda been pretty distraught to wanna throw alla that heaven and salvation down the dumpster like that.

Sin? I don't think he really gave a s#!t.

Like I was saying, "Am I gonna eat it-Or is it gonna eat me?"

Life is quick-Time is short-and Dead is dead.

I gotta lotta livin' to do 'fore I die and I ain't got time to waste.

I quoted your post so you could see what I was referring to. And mine, so you could see that I never said anything about a forum poster hangin out on the dock.

Cold-ass reality? You betcha.....I don't beat around the bush for anyone.

I have said before that Atheist have treated me better than most of the Christians I know personally & see  everyday.

Aaaah. Peoples is peoples. They is what they is.regardless of what they believe or preach.  The way I look at it-Ya can't polish a turd.

Doesn't matter if they preach christian righteousness or atheist goodliness, observant people will see right through it if they're an asshat to begin with.

Those of us who are paying attention know who's who.

'Sides...I even think buf's all right.

He ain't right, but he's all right.

After all....

How bad can a HAM be?
