Ok, maybe you are the one to ask. When we were in Memphis last, we didn't know where to look for good bbq. We got several suggestions and ended up at a place on Beale St. I can't remember the name right now. We were sent to one place there that had 'pig' in the name, I don't remember, but they were out of bbq. The bbq was ok, but I was hoping for much better than ok. It would be nice to know which way to go next time. Btw, mister likes Swamp Johns much better than I do. He could eat there every day he says, but then again, he brags that he will eat anything that doesn't move. If it does, it had better be fast!!

I tried Swamp John's catfish over the week-end. Decent, but I still hold that the closer you get to Pickwick, the better the catfish.
That goes with my second observation: the futher you get from Memphis, the worse the Bar B Que.
I have found a few exceptions, but that is a good rule of thumb.

Next time you are in Memphis, try the Rendivous. Go out the front door of the Peabody hotel, cross the street into the alley, and about halfway down the alley steps go downstairs. Ribs are wonderful (Michelob on tap), and pulled pork BBQ prety good.
Out in Germantown, on G'town road about 2 blocks south of Poplar is the Germantown Commisary. My personal favorite for pulled pork.

Corky's is also excellent. Gridley's used to be excellent , but he died and I don't know if his resturant is still there, or how it is.

I agree with you. I used to live in Memphis. Would drive past Corky's for Rendivous dry rub ribs!

If you happen to be at a Red Birds game, get the sausage and cheese plate or BBQ nachos from the Rendivous stand there. It is better than a hot dog there!

I've eaten at about every BBQ joint in Memphis and they all have something unique about them whether it be their sauce or just lousy bbq; each does it with their own flair.
The last time I was in the area, we ate at Tommy Leonard's Old South Barbecue
6871 Highway 51 N., Horn Lake, MS. They have some of the best bbq I've eaten in Memphis in a long time. Here is a link to a listing of a lot of the Q joints in Memphis. Memphis Q Joints
Bozo's is in Mason, TN. They used to cook on a big old fashion pit but now use a brick pit fired by charcoal. I am originally from West Tennessee so I grew up on Bozo's. My dad had to stop there every time we went to Memphis.
Interesting tidbit about the original owner. He was sued in 1991 by Bozo the Clown of Chicago fame for name copyright violation. It went to court and Bozo the BBQ'er won since he had been using the name since the 20's. The judge told the clown that he was lucky that he wasn't sued for name infringement. Here is a great link to BBQ Joints Dixie Dining

Hey Max, when is that fund raiser? I may need to schedule some time to see my mama and go get some BBQ!

I think it's saturday but I'm not 100% sure. I have to go to Killen tommorow so I'll check the sign out and post it. Now I'm sure that it's a fish dinner not BBQ.
Swamp Johns has great food.....I prefer the authentic one in Red Bay (Hwy 24 and Hwy 247 intersection) in the old gas station. People are extremely friendly and nice. Everytime I am back in P.C. from Florida I go there for my great catfish. Try it. Also Newman's on Hwy 72 between Florence and Killen is great catfish...feeds lots of people and fast service.
