Hopefully it will run its course and wander into oblivion, but I doubt that can happen. It will stick around and mutate just like any other flu. I think the dangerous part of this particular flu is the way it is adapting / mutating. The laws of probability say we will eventually experience something catastrophic. Let's hope it is still years away.
I believe it will "fester" and smolder thru the population with sporadic cases all thru the summer and fall. It will manifest itself much ctronger in the winter months, and will likely then reach its pandemic stage. By that time, there should be a fairy good vaccine to minimize the effects of the virus. Thus far it has shown itself to be more of a nusiance, but I think it is really getting a stronghold in the population and will makes its mark in the winter months.

It was declared a pandemic a couple of months ago. I'm sure you knew that but you bring up an interesting point: If a disease becomes "pandemic" then cycles back to a local outbreak, does it lose it's "pandemic" status only to regain it again?

Or is it "once a pandemic, always a pandemic.*"

(* for those that don't know, "pandemic" is NOT a measure of the severity of a disease. It simply means it is present worldwide. There could be 4 cases in each country or billions but the term would still apply.)
My terminolgy of a pandemic is one whereby a disease manifests itself in population with little to no immunity and occurs in all age groups, affecting up to 50% of the population, and having a detrimental effect on the economic well being of that population, as well as having a mortality of greater of 5%. the cmmon flu kills 36,000 people a year in the US, and it is considered a general nuisiance by comparison.
I personally think the trigger was pulled to quick on this flu, though they are right to be concerned, and the term "pandemic" should not have been used.
It weakens the terminology, and now what do you use to describe it? Is the common cold virus a "pandemic"? By their definition it should be since it is present worldwide, albeit it may have mutated and not be the same virus, the origins are the same.
When we have a true "pandemic", I assure you there will be no problem with the terminology.

Teyates, do not try to confuse people with your background of knowledge! it is more fun to play "Guess Again"!
FV,
I really don't know. The flu vaccine typically is composed to include the common strains which usually start in Asia and move this way. My guess is that it will include the H1N1 strain in the makeup, and if they are smart they will plan for an increased number of immunizations this year, sort of like a few years ago. I do not know if they will start early, it really depends on if the vaccines are ready and the programs in place to administer them. I would imagine they will start around October, but that is just a guess.
