From the good book of Judges.

Remember, read your bible to your children every day!

0 “You are welcome at my house,” the old man said. “Let me supply whatever you need. Only don’t spend the night in the square.” 21 So he took him into his house and fed his donkeys. After they had washed their feet, they had something to eat and drink.

22 While they were enjoying themselves, some of the wicked men of the city surrounded the house. Pounding on the door, they shouted to the old man who owned the house, “Bring out the man who came to your house so we can have sex with him.”

23 The owner of the house went outside and said to them, “No, my friends, don’t be so vile. Since this man is my guest, don’t do this disgraceful thing. 24 Look, here is my virgin daughter, and his concubine. I will bring them out to you now, and you can use them and do to them whatever you wish. But to this man, don’t do such a disgraceful thing.”

25 But the men would not listen to him. So the man took his concubine and sent her outside to them, and they raped her and abused her throughout the night, and at dawn they let her go. 26 At daybreak the woman went back to the house where her master was staying, fell down at the door and lay there until daylight.

27 When her master got up in the morning and opened the door of the house and stepped out to continue on his way, there lay his concubine, fallen in the doorway of the house, with her hands on the threshold. 28 He said to her, “Get up; let’s go.” But there was no answer. Then the man put her on his donkey and set out for home.

29 When he reached home, he took a knife and cut up his concubine, limb by limb, into twelve parts and sent them into all the areas of Israel. 30 Everyone who saw it said, “Such a thing has never been seen or done, not since the day the Israelites came up out of Egypt. Think about it! Consider it! Tell us what to do!”

I find it amusing (and somewhat confusing) that Christians get upset when the bible is quoted. What is the problem? Seems to me that all Sue has done is encourage you all to read the bible to your children and has not changed a word of what can be found there.

Could it be that these are the parts that make you squirm? Could these passages be hard for you to reconcile with your belief in a loving God?

Sure seems that way to me.

For O No, the reason it is the same thing over and over is because the bible is the same. Nothing has changed about it in 2000 years. Its the same crazy, hate filled, bronze age text that people in this modern time are still defending as a moral guide. I agree. Its nuts.

I can truly understand why you don't want religion mixed with politics. I don't either. But this kind of thread has nothing to do with your civil rights or mine. It is just pure hatred for something you don't or WON'T understand. You don't HAVE to read the Bible if you don't want to. Why does it bother you so much if I DO?

What makes you think it's a middle aged person?

Of course it doesn't sound like Bill, he tries everyday to convince everyone he's a Christian. My point was that he would do something like this to give himself an even bigger platform than he already has to preach. I, for one, am sick of hearing him try to convince people he's a Christian. Sad thing is, some actually believe it.

Hi Chuck,

It is not only our atheist Friends who do this.  Several years ago, Al Williams came on trying to sell his New Age Urantia Book religion to folks.  When several of us began to refute his New Age teaching -- he created several alternative pseudonyms so that he would have someone on the Forum who could agree with him.  One was the "Girl From Malibu."

And, old Fish (from a few years back) had more posting names than the post office has street addresses.  It would not surprise me at all -- if this new Friend, Sue Darwin (how original!) -- is not old Fish in drag.

But, what the hey -- the pseudonym and the avatar might be different -- but, the Fishy smell still lingers.

Y'all come back now, ya heah?

Bill

Hi O No,

While I agree with you, and many others on the Religion Forum, that I would not like to see a theocracy in America -- how do you feel about Christian influence within our government?  Do you want to see all Christian influence taken out of government at all levels?

If so, that would create a purely secular government.  And, a 100% secular government is what is described for the coming Antichrist's government in all End Times prophecies.  Would you really prefer that type of government in America today?  I would not.

The ideal government, in my opinion, is one which has a balance of Christian and secular voices -- each balancing the other, to guide our civil governance.  This is what was described in the Mayflower Compact, what was laid out in the Declaration of Independence, and what was defined in our Constitution.

Of course, some with ask, "Well, if Christian, why not Muslim or Buddhist?"

Simple.  America was founded as a Christian nation -- not a Muslim nation, nor a Buddhist nation.

One day, after the Tribulation, when Christ has returned and established His Millennial Kingdom -- we will have the perfect theocracy.  Until then, I am all for working in a government balanced between our Christian faith and secular knowledge.

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Bill

Bill, it comes as no surprise to me that after having these lies disproved time and time again, that you still hold onto them.  It also doesn't surprise me that you have no idea what principles the documents you cite contain.  The feathers in your Liars for Jesus cap make you look like you are wearing an American Indian Chief's headdress.  Your lack of historical understanding, even after having been schooled quite thoroughly here, only marks you as an idiot, or intentional liar, or both.  Keep telling yourself these lies, but don't try to peddle them to intelligent people.  Only fools, idiots and liars spew this nonsense.

Whats not to understand? Its simple enough for even children as young as 18 months to understand, right?

I never said anything about you reading the bible. I sincerely don't care how many times you pour over it. You ask a question and I answered it.

I'm going to make another analogy here so please bear with me.

Picture yourself at the symphony. Now, everyone has the ability to ENJOY good music. But to UNDERSTAND it, one must have a grasp of music theory. When I go to the symphony I enjoy the music for its own sake. I enjoy the mind pictures and the emotion it envokes.

But because I also know music theory and play several different instruments myself, I get another level of enjoyment out of it. When I hear the interplay of the different instruments I can actually SEE the notes on the page and the "dance" that the musicians are performing with their instruments. Sometimes, quite often actually, there are even musical "jokes" hidden in the score that only a musician with a grasp of theory will catch.

So while someone who doesn't understand music may enjoy it, someone who DOES will get a much richer, fuller, deeper enjoyment, on so many different levels.

I submit that a person who has had no religious education and has no belief in God may "understand" the WORDS of the Bible, but they mostly miss the true meaning. And from the things some of the atheists here say, it is obvious that I am right.

Imagine the massive dent that Fish left on Bill's head! Everywhere he turns, he still sees FishEverywhere! For years now I doubt any single atheist on the board has escaped being wrongly accused of being the almighty Fish. Wow. What a massive dent.

Dark, whether you accept a statement as fact or prefer to believe two or three people who have axes to grind with a friend of mine, as well as "GoFish," one of your friends (and mine) I believe, Trader and I left that local blog in October 2010. If you don't like something The Connection publishes or Nurse Nan, fine, but don't blame us for everything published in the Shoals. We took our blogs with us, although he no longer does his.

I simply object to the atheist play book which teaches proponents of that non-religion to denigrate Christians' intelligence.

Semi, I don't think too many people under 40 know Henny Youngman. My kids tell me sociologists now say you aren't middle aged until 45, so maybe I shouldn't say middle aged.

I vaguely remember Go Fish and he was pretty hostile on here. He said that was an act, didn't he? Wouldn't that be hypocritical?

I liked Fish. He was blunt, said what he thought, & didn't lie. Yes, he was hostile, but usually when attacked. I don't remember him saying it was an act.

The only hypocrite I know on here is Bill. Oops, scratch that, two people.

I have no idea who GoFish is, or if we have mutual friends. I wonder why you think we do...?

Regardless, you accused me of saying I was more intelligent and better educated than those that believe in the bible. No, you said I insisted I was. I have never stated such a thing. It seems to be a common accusation leveled at atheist. I have wondered why for many years. My opinion is that when we point out the idiocy or contradictions of the bible to otherwise intelligent and logical people they get defensive. They must feel that their intelligence is being doubted. Why I wonder? Could it be that intelligent people, who have the ability to discern between fact and fiction in all other aspects of their lives, deep down feel stupid for believing in gods and mythical characters?

I guess it is just easier to accuse the person who is asking them to think deeper and question the logic of religion of calling them stupid than to actually examine the issue from a rational stand point.

Oh yeah, somehow I missed the day they were handing out the play book. Can you get me a copy of that? So far I have also missed the "teaching" of how to denigrate Christian intelligence. Here I thought I was a pretty good atheist, now I realize I have so much more to learn.
