Yes, they are legal for officers and civilians.

Are they legal in places that have signs posted:
No Weapons Allowed.

That would be up to the establishment that posted the sign. It is considered a weapon. At this moment you aren't required to have a carry concealed permit for them.

Downside is you are tethered to the bad guy by a 20 foot wire. You can either stay and keep shocking him until help arrives or he submits, or donate an eight hundred dollar piece of equipment to him when you throw it down and run away.

Don't they have some that don't tether to the bad guy now? Are they really that expensive? Of course, my family's life is worth WAY WAY WAY more than 800.

Yeah, they have models without the 20 foot of wire. Of course, you have to be in actual physical contact to use that model. A name brand Taser costs a little over $800 dollars, the cartridges are approximately $25.00 each, and can only be fire once. The have a limited warantee, and a 4 year warantee costs $180.00 extra. There are cheaper "stun guns" on the market, but you get what you pay for.

Of course your family's life is worth more than $800. I didn't mean to imply it wasn't.

My family's life is worth enough that I would kill to protect them, without hesitation or question. A Taser is not a substitution for lethal force, just another option to use if it's viable. I would not use a Taser on someone armed with a gun or knife, or most other weapons. If the Taser misses, or malfunctions, they would have time to use the weapon on my family. I would use a gun from the start.

That's what I referenced when I mentioned the ones without the 20 foot wire. The type you mention is called a "stun gun". Some can be had for as little as $40 or $50.

I personally have seen more than one individual that stun guns did not incapacitate after the device was deactivated. As long as they were being shocked, it worked. But the moment the current quit, they began fighting again.

Really brave? No, just particularly foolish to allow an attacker that close.
