Dire, it's called creative accounting.

Awww, JT, did I blow your little liberal thesis out of the water -- so sorry, I see you bring up the old progressive atale argument about red/blue state taxes, without expanation -- just like your original statement. Deploying your deflector shield -- not as powerful as a force shield, however. As, I've stated, there are a number of reasons -- not one state sponging off another.
1. Medicare/social security beneficiaries are mostly older and migrate to warmer, less expensive states after retirement. Guess progressives will demand internal passports like the old Soviet Union and federal apporval to move.
2. Federal payments, in lieu of property taxes, for federal owned/controlled land. The western states, excepting the coastal states, have much of their land tied up by the government. Arizona -- aout 93 percent, I believe. Simple solution -- return all ands not required to the states or sell it. BLM controlled land, especially, Locally, TVA is much the same. But, the funds paid to the states are from our utility bills, not outside blue states.
3. Large military installations -- historically, this was a combination of old Demorat congressmen influencing the location of bases, warm climate to ensure more training days for the troops and cheap land. Blue states did their best to run off such bases. Remember when Reagan desired to base a squadron in the SF Bay area. Lefties were in full cry.
No, its not creative accounting -- that is just another word for fraud. I'm familar wth such accounting and those who use it. Many, of whom, spent time in state and federal grey bar hotels -- many were Democrats.
