I was in the process of posting about this same topic. Glad I caught your post before I posted it though.

Some offerings on TimesDaily.com will remain free to all users — including obituaries, classifieds and forums — and will not count in the 15 free articles.

Good news for the forum I guess. For now.

I can easily live without the online version though. Plenty of other options available.

Since I moved back to Florence a couple of years ago, I've tried a few times to subscribe.
The subscription process always fails at the same point--the screen where I choose my payment method always ignores the subscription option I've chosen, and says I need to go back and choose.

If they really need my money, they should take it when it's offered, rather than trying to break something else.

I just saw this little article: http://www.timesdaily.com/opin...46-10604b9f6eda.html

It states the TD has just dramatically improved its format. I can count at least three "upgrades" since April 2012, and I'm not sure any were improvements. In fact, some older stories in the archives are gone forever.

I'm with RP about online sites. JMHO, with which we know Best and Semi disagree, but here's a rundown:

Shoals Insider--Very little new content and then only Fed. press releases. Not worth it.

Quad-Cities Daily--Births, deaths, and more local, esp. Colbert County. All the arrest reports you could want plus original pics of almost any event, free to download.

Pen N Sword--Covers five local counties and has background stories on almost any local crimes or criminals. Also has detailed "Most Wanted" section and one on "Missing Persons."

As I have told you kate, and apparently you ignore or want to twist it:

Never heard of it until you mentioned it, but it must be a "rival". Have to say, it sounds like your pns site.

I had never heard of it until you mentioned it, and not interested in what it has on it's site.

Just a blog imo, with articles taken from other sites with no credit given, mostly the opinion of the one posting under an ID, not their name, as one would expect from an actual journalist. Matches the description you gave of the SI. "Background stories on criminals", most likely meaning gossip. "Most wanted, missing persons" can be found on legitimate sites made for that purpose, nothing unique there, and a site so desperate for readers it has to link to it's site on all other free places it can, while demeaning one of the very forums it uses to do that. No reponse needed kate, I've said before, if people are willing to pay for advertising and read such things, they can have at it.

And Best, as I have told you, I have no site. If you want to know what I do for extra income, I'll be happy to tell you...and sell you one!

As for my comment about the Shoals Insider, I just looked and the last news story was dated June 19th. What? Nothing has happened since June 19th? I know the man and woman who own this site also (and it's not me!) and they are nice, but apparently have no interest in the site anymore. Yes, I know the ones who own PNS and QCD and consider them friends also. You really need to actually look at online news sites before you critique them.

Gee kate, you're pretty dense aren't you? You really need to read and understand a post before you reply. First of all, where did I critique the two I haven't seen? The last one, the blog, you linked to and I clicked on it long ago when I thought you had posted a link to a legitimate news site. So I have seen it and you know that. Now, where in my post did I say you owned anything? I posted, long ago, that you must get paid for hits on the one site because you sneak the link in every chance you get, one reason I stopped clicking on links you post. I still think you have some interest in that other than a "friend" owning it. I told you long ago to stop using your posts to me to push those sites.  Believe me, I wouldn't buy anything from you.

Yes, Best, I get 10K every time I link a site. Wonderful, isn't it.

BTW, I left out the Franklin Free Press which has a lot of great Franklin County news for anyone who might be interested. It especially has a lot of sports articles about local schools.

----------------------

i seriously doubt those sites ever generated 10k for anyone. Never heard of the ffp either and not interested.

Odd that Kate should mention the Q-C Daily & PNS. OB, in his blog today, mentioned the same thing, with a little more info. He put in his & Kate’s blog that there blog is alternatives for viewing local news & events online, that they are free for viewing, & what's in them. He/she claimed the editing at both of those online news sites is much better than the TD. (Of course, they would say that) OB also mentioned that they will see their “number of page hits increase, making people’s advertising dollars worth while and well spent”.

It’s my guess that they are on this forum & TD to get news articles for their blog.

FTR, I'm not involved in OB's blog, except as a faithful reader, or any other blog. Semi, at least I wasn't one of the 20 or so Diogenes listed as candidates for being the Shoals' most famous (or is that infamous) blogger.

Jank, you're right the QCD is fantastic, and anyone who says they won't read it because it's local is, oh, what's the word? A bigot?
