Many southerners omit the "h" sound when they pronounce "consonant h" words..Listen to your friends talk! As an old teacher friend, said They would not put "Babtist on their enrollment card if they pronounced it correctly." Yes, schools used to ask about religion. My immedicate reaction this AM as a foodie was OMG, followed by "They must be feeding a large crowd! If the writer, editor did not know about J and W this is a most logical error.
I often pass by Johnson & Whales as I travel from Gunterford Road to Shoals Creek. If I'm feeling really well, I take the scenic route via Applebee Boulevard. If I'm feeling badly, I stop by the Detention Center to see my cousin the trustee before I go home to lay down.

Can you name the eight (8) errors in that sentence--one's already a given.

1. Whales
2. Gunwaleford Road
3. Shoal Creek (no "s")
4. Appleby Boulevard
5. Feeling good (not well)
6. Feeling bad (not badly)
7. Lie down (not lay down)
8. Detention Center (not a proper noun, shouldn't be capitalized)

How did I do?

Why do you try to insult the intelligence of other people?

Sir, I think you are inferring something I didn't intend. These are all errors that I have frequently seen in the TD. Perhaps you should ask beeb the same question if you feel this way--she started the topic.

I have greatly enjoyed learning new terms, etc., here on the Forum. I have learned from Joy, Interventor, and others. Learning should never stop, nor should our sense of humor dry up.
If you see:
"I went to the river to fish."

But read it as:
"I went fishing at the river."

The meaning or full context is still there. Given, that RESIDENCE and HOUSE are more similar than RESIDENT and RESIDENCE but the context when you're reading the article hasn't actually changed for anyone with a reading education of 5th grade or better.

In other words until Times Daily starts getting the main facts or the context of their articles wrong, then a few incorrect words here and there have no bearing with me. Annoying? Maybe, but I'll live.
So, if you pay for a five-dollar item with a ten and the clerk hands you back three in change that's okay? I mean, you know it's CHANGE, so we all get the context, right?

For an English teacher, I'm actually pretty tolerant of average folks' mistakes, but what shows up in the paper is supposed to be the work of a professional writer, vetted by the work of a professional editor. They are paid to get it right.

As for the idea that the content is all that matters, I was raised to believe that a dirty floor means a dirty plate. Careless with grammar; careless with facts.

When I read my newspaper that I pay to be delivered to my home daily, I do not feel that I should have to compare it to the books that I read in the 5th grade.

I have stated numerous times that I am not an expert in journalism, grammar, or anything associated with "the proper way that things should be written". However, the employees of the TD should be.

Not exactly the same. Better if the clerk handed you back five dollars in pennies would be a more accurate example of the full context of the situation. It's still five dollars but who wants 500 pennies? That would be annoying to me for sure, but I would just take the 500 pennies to the bank to get my bill.

Given you back three dollars would be wrong, so that would compare to a TD article misprinting the facts.

I'm not trying to argue with you guys about it or take up for one side or the other. I'm just simply stating as long as I can understand what has been written and it's not grossly misinforming than I'm fine with it.

Again, this is not what I meant either. I was merely referring to the fact that the TD articles with improper spellings and such that have been pointed out in this particular thread could still have been understood by a 5th grader or the education thereof. Not that the TD is printed in the form of 5th grade books.
What about the simple beauty of the English language? It is our native tongue. We should speak, as well as write it, correctly. We should learn proper grammar, punctuation, spelling, etc., from the cradle to the grave.

The TD is by no means perfect, but as a previous poster said, this is what they're paid to do! They write for a living & the editors (should) EDIT for a living! Typos do exist, and "Whales" is a word; however, a quick read-over or a fact-checking would have kept that from being printed. Spell-check is a blessing, but you have to be at least close to what the word is for spell-check to know what you meant.

From my "screen name" (or whatever it's called), you can tell I'm not from around here, but this isn't a North/South issue. Professional publications SHOULD be held to a higher standard. It's not too much for us to expect proper (or standard) English from the TD! All it would take is a little attention to detail.

I don't mean to offend.....
