WASHINGTON - Homeland Security officials are warning that right-wing extremists could use the bad state of the U.S. economy and the election of the country's first black president to recruit new members to their cause.
In an intelligence assessment issued to law enforcement last week, Homeland Security officials said there was no specific information about an attack from right-wing extremists in the works.
The agency warns that an extended economic downturn with real estate foreclosures, unemployment and an inability to obtain credit could foster an environment for extremists to recruit new members who may not have been supportive of these causes in the past.
In November, law enforcement officials were seeing more threats and unusual interest against then- President-elect Barack Obama than ever before.

As always, "why doth the heathen rage!" If the teabag parties are just a few millionaires and their dupes, instead of a true groundswell of public revulsion, why are so many lefties raging against them. Why are paid activist groups like ACORN planning disruption? Sounds like they are unnerved and fearful of a real spontaneous demonstration.

President Obama won the election with more votes than George Bush in both of his elections. To suggest that the extraordinary economic times we live in can be related to a speech given by a 19th century president is a bit naive. It bears remembering that Lincoln, while an exceptional man in many ways, ignored the American Constitution, viciously sent Sherman into the south, arrested the Maryland Legislature, and executed teenage boys. He had his moments.
