The money to pay Halliburton and Blackwater contractors has to come from somewhere, so these troopers need to just man up and accept their living conditions so that Dick Cheney's friends can add to their balance sheets!

This is truly atrocious. Remember these conditions the next time you hear some right winger barf out a load of rebuke for Clinton's alleged neglect of the military. The Bush maladministration, remember, is the same one that gave you our troops the magnificent conditions reported a year or so back at the Walter Reed Army Hospital. Remember these conditions next time you hear G.W. Bush ramble on about taking care of our troops. Remember this travesty on the first Tuesday in November.
I don't support this war. Well, I do think they should be looking for Osama, since he was "supposedly" behind 9/11, but our soldiers are not supposed to be the world police. Ithink we are making enemies out of every country, which dilutes our power. I look for America to be under martial law in the next 20 years. Not only do we need to contact our reps in Congress, but we need to keep track of the new laws that are being voted in. Try reading "Behold A Pale Horse" by Milton W. Cooper and see what happened the day that Bush declared a state of national emergency. Red Face. HR 40791

Ali, you may want to watch yourself. Someone on this forum may call you anti-American for suggesting that we are making enimies around the world.

No excuse for these conditions. Has the Inspector General been contacted? Has the US Public Health Service been contacted. As a seperate military organization, PHS has the power to condemn federal buildings, including DOD.

Yes, Yes, and Yes..another unfortunate tale of too little too late. The Army's infrastructure has not had a major overhaul in nearly 60 years. For most of the Cold War, US military budget for the most part went to Navy and Air Force programming. It was not until the current conflict did funding stream and attention to infrastructure finally take priority with Congress, DoD etc..We (Army) are undergoing the largets transformation and update to the force that the Army has ever seen. While not excusable, understandable from the standpoint that Rome was not built in a day. This is the same issue with Walter Reed, where we do not have enough spaces for the force we have as BRAC has shutter dozens of posts camps and stations, and contractors routinely fail to meet deadlines in new construction as well as modernization of old construction. The end result are videos like this and the Walter Reed fiasco..The only thing that takes longer than the contractor is the funding stream. There are many competing priorities with the amount of money that is available, and there are litterally hundreds of rules as to what can be spent, where it can be spent and what it can be spent on, not even touching on the "colors" of money as it gets programmed from Congress..The rules are meant to prevent fraud, but the amount of red tape makes the system incredibally cumbersome and devoid of common sense. On another note, and I'll take the whipping in which I am sure is to come, if there were no war, there would be no money for the Army's infrastructure issues, and not folks would care as much about this tape..this has been a problem for 30 years, not anything new! For the record, I am ashamed for my Army, and embarrased for the 25 year old Captain who will likely have to endure severe scrutiny of his Company and his career because he got caught even though obviously no one above him has done anything about it.
I called the Fort Bragg Commanding General' Office about what I just saw...
At First the individual I was talking too wanted to put the blame on the NCO's for not reporting the conditions...
When he was told that was a crock the commanding officer and his staff are responsible for all the brigades, battalions and conditions in which they live.

I then asked the next question ...when is the General and his staff moving into the building, as I am sure they want to lead by example, and would not put their men into a situation that they themselves would not live in...

Second question...
When are the men going to be move to a motel, hotel under BAH funds until the environment has been corrected...

The Officer, I was talking to stated, most of the items shown on the U-tube video, had be corrected, except for the paint, etc...

He also stated, a lot of the men had been transferred to newer barricks already. Apparently their phones have been flooded with calls.
If you would like to call and voice your concern about the situation...the number is 910-396-3111

Two questions for the soldier in question:
1. Did he go through the proper chain of command with his complaints?
2. Does he realize that he VOLUNTEERED to be in the US Army? Perhaps he's forgotten that part.

I want our servicepeople to have the absolute best housing and conditions, but you can't go to YouTube with a complaint -- go to the proper people who might can get action on the problem!
There are supposed to be inspections of barracks regularly by senior NCOs, or preferably, junior officers. Sounds like a breakdown in that process. That's what got the Walter Reed commander in trouble. Inside the gates the facilities were fairly decent. But, the overflow building outside the fence was atrocious and no inspections were made.

The officer did not go to YouTube. His father did.

In the video, if you watch it, it states this has gone on for a long time - years. Of course that's obvious in the video when you see the condition of the barracks. The "chain of command" were, are and have always been aware of the problem because they gave them empty promises several times that never came to fruition.

What does volunteering for the US Army have to do with unsanitary decrepit barracks? They need to use common sense & deal with it. How many have to get sick from living in these conditions before someone does something about it? How much money is spent trying to keep them well? It's much wiser to repair the facilities thus eliminating the sickness and medical costs.

Again, his dad said that his son did not complain. It's his father who is ticked off about it and with GOOD reason.
That would have lasted about 10 minutes when I was in the Navy! We shot a missile from Cape Canaveral and there was this little "lodge" that was there at the dock and a club house, too, and the mattresses were full of bugs. One first class petty officer went to the Engineer and he to the XO and about an hour later there were all these new mattresses and a cleaning detail from Kennedy on the ground.

One thing that isn't known is that at sea the officers, chiefs, and crew all eat the exact same food -- different messes, but the same food. When there is steak for a seaman recruit, it is steak for an admiral if he is onboard . . . and the officers have to pay for theirs, too!

How is the fact that he VOLUNTEERED related to the discussion?

1. Watch the whole video, they had been promised new barracks / problems worked on when they came home from their 15 month deployment.

2. They volunteer to serve our country and protect us. They do not volunteer to live in slums.
