Texas man killed by angry mob after car hits child

An angry crowd beat a man to death after a vehicle he was riding in struck and injured a young girl, police said Wednesday. Police believe 2,000 to 3,000 people were in the area for a Juneteenth celebration when the attack occurred Tuesday night.

The driver had stopped to check on the little girl at the entrance to an apartment complex when a group of men attacked him, authorities said. The passenger, David Rivas Morales, 40, got out to try to help the driver, but the crowd turned on him, said police Commander Harold Piatt.

Morales was beaten to death by as many as 20 men and left lying in a parking lot, Piatt said. A preliminary autopsy listed blunt force trauma as the cause of death.

The little girl, 3 or 4 years old, was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver, who got away from the crowd, is cooperating with investigators, police said.

Piatt did not know how many witnesses had been identified, but thousands of people had been in the area for the daylong festival. He said no guns or knives appeared to have used in the fatal attack.

Juneteenth marks the day Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston in 1865 to share news of the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed slaves two years earlier on Jan. 1, 1863.


Just to clarify - the guy wasn't driving. The child was not killed. This is what our country is coming to???

Is this a hate crime? What would happen if a crowd of white people beat to death a black guy? Would Jessie Jackson be there? So when is he scheduled to show up for this one?

It's like the Knoxville couple that was abducted, raped, tortured, and murdered back in January. The couple was white, the killers are black. It barley made news. If the races were reversed, we'd be bombarded by it in the news, Jessie & Al would be all over it demanding justice. They are pretty quiet about this one.

There is a double standard that is growing in this country and it's scary.

The double standard has been here for years. We live in the land of the offended. The catch is, only minorities are entitled to be offended.
I could go on a rant but it is pointless. Too many people are sticking their head in the sand when it comes to racial equality (or the lack there of).
The "good" news is (insert sarcasm) in just a few years, "we" will no longer be the majority.

If a kid is in the street or the parking lot where cars belong, they're gonna get hit. WHERE ARE THE PARENTS?

Nowhere does the article state that the driver was on the phone or drunk If anything, the eveidence points to the contrary.

There are several neighborhoods where people deliberately walk or congreagate in the street and DARE you to hit them. Then they can play victim rather than accepting responsibility for their situation.

If war has never solved anything, what the H@@@ do you call beating the crap out of someone becasue of an ACCIDENT?

How do you know he was drunk or distracted? Kids run out in front of cars all the time. How do you know that the child didn't just dart out in front his car? You weren't there, so you don't.

A very tragic accident happened to a friend of mine where he hit a child. It was pitch dark and the kid just suddenly ran out in front of his car with no time to stop. The police ruled it an accident. Should my friend have been killed by a mob as well?

Besides, the child was treated for non life threatening injuries. So obviously he wasn't going very fast and was alert enough to stop quick enough to keep from killing her.

I'm amazed at how stupid people are and how little logic they use. What a completely stupid and moronic thing for you to say. Try thinking before you type next time and you won't look like such an idiot.

Wasn't Morales the passenger? I may be reading it wrong... but it says: "The passenger, David Rivas Morales, 40, got out to try to help the driver, but the crowd turned on him, said police Commander Harold Piatt."

It was completely uncalled for to beat this man to death. Very sad situation all around. Thankfully the little girl was alright.

Your post is confusing. Please try combining grammar and punctuation with your insults.

As far as justifying the lynching of a passenger in a vehicle that struck a small child, I think your logic is flawed.

Assuming the driver was at fault is another flaw in your rant.

If it was my child?
I would focus my attention on making sure my child was safe. I certainly wouldn't want them to witness a senseless murder in the name of "justice".

"Driving the speed limit in the left lane" - Laugh. How about driving the speed limit in the "RIGHT" lane. Pun intended.

No, this little girl would probably have been alright, but now, because of a pack of idiots, she will have this as a childhood memory. What was she and all the other children in this neighborhood taught here? People cannot teach, what they do not know. And...these 'people' showed, by their actions, that they are no more intelligent, than a pack of wild dogs. Every child, connected to any of them, should be taken and put into foster homes. That would be the only way, that they would ever know right from wrong.

Thanks maddmax, I guess I need to go in and change the 'unknown' thing. I learned something today!! Thanks again. I don't remember where I first saw the quote, but it didn't have a name attached then. I just think it says so much.

I am saying at least she was physically alright. That is true though, she will have terrible memories because of what happened.


I apologize, just saying, I wasn't trying to take anything away from what you had said. I agree, whole heartedly. I guess I should not have started my comment with "No". I do have strong feelings about the affect on this child. I too, am thankful that she is ok physically. Again, I didn't mean to be rude.
