Bless your heart! Don't try to do too much or expect alot from yourself. It is very OK to cry but it very OK to have a chuckle about an funny thing your mom did or said. Love your heart!
I like to cook a ham in a paper grocery bag. Put your ham in the bag, fold it one time closed. Place on the lowest rack in your oven and cook 20-25 minutes per pound maybe around 300 degrees. So easy, so good! Tell everyone else what to bring. Have a good time!
Do yourself a favor and splurge and go order a Honey Baked Ham, spiral cut, to serve at Thanksgiving. Make a sweet potato casserole with marshmallow topping, green beans, mashed potatoes and gravy, and a red velvet cake for dessert. Nothing says Thansgiving like a red velvet cake. good luck, your mother would be proud of you for carrying on her tradition.
Unlike my spouse, my kids and most of my friends, I am not intimidated by a kitchen or cooking. Some of my fondness memories of my mom and grandmother were in the kitchen. My mom and I had a different viewpoint of food and cooking more or less because of our different taste. She was more traditional and I’m more adventurous.

One of my favorite dished which she shared with me was potato salad. I took her recipe, tweaked it to my liking by adding garlic powder and another spice. This was the only time that I ever remember her saying that mine was better than hers. She also enjoyed the peanut brittle which I learned to make.

My biggest accomplishment last year was not giving everyone food poisoning for cooking our family Christmas dinner.
Country Ham !!!!
Buy a country ham, have it cut in 2, and the larger part cut in slices for later.
Take the other piece and put it in water and cook just under a boil for about 5 hours.

My wife dosn't like ham and especially country ham, and we'll probably have a dammed turkey, so if you do this, let me know and I'll bring the dressing. Smiler

As far as brown bag cooking my only experience was eating something (can't remember what now) at the Columbia resturant in Tampa a few years ago cooked that way.
