Pope Benedict was never a member of the SS, the armed forces of the NSDAP. He was a member of the Hitler Youth, for a time. He was drafted into the German Army and spent time in an anti-aircraft unit.

Pope John Paul was a factory work and a member of the Polish underground that fought the Germans. Yet, Benedict and he were close friends. Please get your stories straight before posting. Otherwise, you come off as foolish. No, I am not a catholic.
Howard, my point, and I certainly did not state it clearly, is that anyone who has been associated with Hitler and the Nazi party have been denied entrance to the US (if such association is known). Now we allow Mr. Ratzinger to enter the county, even for religious or political reasons. What kind of message does that send about us?

Oh, and, PA, am I correct that you're a veteran (on our side--not anyone else's)?
Hi FirenzeVeritas,

Do you happen to recall a group of Germans, led by Werner von Braun, who took over Huntsville's Redstone Arsenal in the late 1950s and 1960s? They lived in an exclusive portion of Huntsville, and a Huntsville radio station played several hours of German music every afternoon.

I lived in Huntsville in the 1960s -- and the name von Braun was highly respected.

That group of Germans put America on the moon and jump started all of our space explorations. Without them, Russia would have controlled space.

Von Braun and his team of German scientists gave Germany jet powered aircraft before America had them. We were very fortunate to have this group of Germans come to America.

So, I would say that we have welcomed Hitler's Germans into our bosom long before any papal visit.

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Bill
Yes, Bill, I've read extensively about Von Braun and the other German scientists. One of his group lives in retirement in the Center Star community. The son of another was a patient of mine at Huntsville Hospital.

Interestingly enough, there wasn't even a Lutheran church in H'ville until the Germans came. They brought many traditions including living sans carpeting in their homes.

I have also read that these individuals were vetted by our governemnt, for better or worse. I do think for the better. I simply feel that given his background, Ratzinger was a poor choice for the papacy, but since I'm not a Catholic, it obviously does not affect me directly.
