Whew! I just went shopping. In the small town I live in, we have a "Giving Tree." You choose a cut out paper ornament from the tree and it has the age and sex of a needy child, a short list of what he wants, a short list of what he needs, and his sizes.

My kid was a male, seven years old, who wanted art supplies and needed socks and underwear. One of our local stores is having a big sale right now so I was able to get a lot of great stuff for him. He got an art supply kit with markers, paints and brushes, crayons, colored pencils, scissors and paper, plus a few other goodies. I got him a package of color changing markers, some neon colored pencils, extra brushes, extra paper, a sculpture of a horse that he must paint himself, a puzzle of the US, a toy truck, some warm boots, a hooded sweatshirt, plus a six pack of socks and a sixpack of underwear.

Why am I telling you this? NOT to blow my own horn! The gifts will be given annonymously. I don't know who the kid is, and as far as he's concerned, these gifts will be from Santa.

But I wanted to share how GOOD I feel. No matter who you are, whether you have religion or not, it is part of human nature to feel good when you do something for someone. It truly IS better to give than receive. I'm doing the happy dance right now, thinking about how much this kid is going to enjoy his new toys.

So, if you haven't given to your local toy fund yet - DO IT! I'd like to see ALL of you feel as good as I do right now. Smiler

Congrats O No. The reason we give is not for the other person but because of the way WE feel.
I agree with you 100%. When I was a kid, my mother told us we had so much stuff that Santa would not come unless we gave some of it away. Of course that was 40 years ago, but I tell the same thing to my child. We always "adopt" a child from AGAPE or North Alabama Childrens Home and go shopping. We call it our "Christmas trick" and we both look forward to it. We have so much and so many have so little. How's that for an old curmudgeon?
