I really enjoy the give and take here at the forum. I would like to shed my take on how there can be so many interpretations as to the nature of religion, indeed there are as many individual takes as there are individuals on this planet, or in the universe…

The unity of religious experience among a social or racial group derives from the identical nature of the God fragment indwelling the individual. It is this divine in man that gives origin to his unselfish interest in the welfare of other men. But since personality is unique—no two human beings being alike—it inevitably follows that no two human beings can similarly interpret the leadings and urges of the spirit of divinity which lives within their minds. A group of individuals can experience spiritual unity, but they can never attain philosophic uniformity. And this diversity of the interpretation of religious thought and experience is shown by the fact that twentieth-century theologians and philosophers have formulated upward of five hundred different definitions of religion. In reality, every human being defines religion in the terms of his own experiential interpretation of the divine impulses emanating from the God spirit that indwells him, and therefore must such an interpretation be unique and wholly different from the religious philosophy of all other human beings.

When one person is in full agreement with the religious philosophy of a another person, that phenomenon indicates that these two individuals have had a similar religious experience touching the matters concerned in their similarity of philosophic religious interpretation.

And while our individual intrepretation of religion is a matter of personal experience, it is most important that we should be exposed to the knowledge of a vast number of other religious experiences (the diverse interpretations of other and diverse men and women) to the end that we may prevent our religious life from becoming egocentric—circumscribed, selfish, and unsocial.

Rationalism is wrong when it assumes that religion is at first a primitive belief in something which is then followed by the pursuit of values. Religion is primarily a pursuit of values, and then there formulates a system of interpretative beliefs. It is much easier for men to agree on religious values—goals—than on beliefs—interpretations. And this explains how religion can agree on values and goals while exhibiting the confusing phenomenon of maintaining a belief in hundreds of conflicting beliefs—creeds. This also explains why a given person can maintain his or her religious experience in the face of giving up or changing many of his or her religious beliefs. Indeed, Religion persists in spite of revolutionary changes in religious beliefs. Theology does not produce religion; it is religion that produces theologic philosophy.

That religionists have believed so much that was false does not invalidate religion because religion is founded on the recognition of values and is validated by the faith of personal religious experience. Religion, then, is based on experience and religious thought; theology, the philosophy of religion, is an honest attempt to interpret that experience. Such interpretative beliefs may be right or wrong, or a mixture of truth and error.

The realization of the recognition of spiritual values is an experience which is superideational. There is no word in any human language which can be employed to designate this "sense," "feeling," "intuition," or "experience" which I have elected here to call God-consciousness. The spirit of God that dwells in us all is not personal—the divine fragment is prepersonal—but this spirit presence presents a value, exudes a flavor of divinity, which is personal in the highest and infinite sense. After all, if God were not at least personal, he could not be conscious, and if not conscious, then would he be infrahuman.

Hi all,

In case anyone missed the point -- this bit of writing was taken from Al's New Age Urantia Book bible -- given to mortals by extraterrestrials in the 1950s.

It has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with God's Written Word, the Bible. Nor does it have anything whatsoever to do with Christianity.

This is strictly the New Age religion Al tried to sell folks on the Religion Forum last year.

Sorry, Al, it is still the same old Shirley Maclaine/Oprah New Age tripe; still Twilight Zone rhetoric -- still cultic, anti-Christian teaching.

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Bill

For me, my religion is my life and the most important part of it. I cannot convert anyone to my knowledge because converting is not my job, it is the Holy Ghosts job. I dont live my religion just on Sundays but every day of my life. I am lacking in many areas but am STRIVING to improve every aspect of my being.
Some people in here try to drag me into debates and arguements about the truth of my religion but I play by my rules. When played on my playgroung THEY loose every time. Religion, true religion isnt something you come to truly understand with your mind or intellect or colege degrees or book learning, it is a SPIRITUAL experiance. Those that attempt to understand it with their human capacities will NEVER be able to understand it at all.
Bet said in one of his nasty slamming posts to me something to the effect that I use God as my personal lie detector. You are very close Bet and if you truly understood the things of the bible and not like you THINK you do, you would know that God has told us that we can learn truth of all things by talking with Him. The Holy Ghosts job is to be a wittnesser of truth and through prayer, YES we can rely on God through the power of the Holy Ghost to know truth from lies and false doctrines taught by men.
SO, debating DOES NOT lead to truth, sincere prayer does. And JAMES 1:5 does tell us to pray and we will receive answers from God for our questions, even to decern lies of others. Ya see Bet, I believe the teachings of the bible but not the way you interpet them, I believe them the way GOD MEANT FOR THEM TO BE UNDERSTOOD.
Yes God hears and answers ALL prayers, Yes James 1:5 means we can learn truth of everything through the power of the Holy Ghost, its His Job. We are told over an over in the bible it is true, Knock and it will be opened, Ask and it shall be given unto you, Pray at all times pray over your fields and flocks. If we were told these things and God never intended to answer our prayers, He would cease to be God.
So YES I KNOW all the things taught by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints are true doctrines of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I know there was a RESTORATION of Gods True church upon this earth today. I KNOW there is a living prophet and 12 living apostles upon this earth today. I KNOW the heavens are once again open to all mankind and we can and will receive answers to ALL our prayers. And I say that in the name of the JESUS CHRIST OF THE BIBLE AMEN!
