Freshman representative: It’s time to party

'We’re conservatives but that doesn’t mean we can’t have fun,' said Jeff Denham. Most fund-raisers in Washington are done in private rooms. Invitations are kept quiet and members of Congress slip in and out, to avoid being seen raising tens of thousands of dollars at swank restaurants and hotels when some Americans are struggling to hold a job.

Jeff Denham, a freshman lawmaker from California who hasn’t even been sworn in yet, went the opposite route Tuesday night with his fund-raiser featuring LeAnn Rimes.

He invited the media in as witnesses, and declared to reporters that it was time to party. “Yeah, we’re conservatives but that doesn’t mean we can’t have fun.”

“Certainly there were a couple of members that said you’re doing things differently,” Denham said before the event, standing in front of a banner that read welcomed “America’s majority.”

“Yes we are. And we’re excited about that. We’re bringing in great entertainment, and that’s some excitement for the Republican Party. I think everybody here is going to have a great time tonight.”

Denham and his sponsors certainly went all out — despite the tone of austerity that incoming Speaker John Boehner is trying to set for his new GOP majority. Jim Beam, Dewers scotch, Johnny Walker Red Label and Souza tequila were readying to be served to VIP patrons at a tended bar. Men in all black stood with earpieces and microphones, “W”s pinned to their lapels.

A POLITICO story Tuesday morning laid bare the hesitations some in Washington had about the event, which was $2,500 a head. Some lawmakers were warned to stay away.

That seemed to encourage Denham — he said the media wanted to ask him questions, so he invited them to the W at the last minute.

Before Denham spoke to the Washington media, a man with a two-way radio urged the media to exit the VIP room quickly after the event and keep questions for the incoming lawmaker brief, because “we have a party to get to.”

Denham defended the event as being “self-reliant,” to ensure that his fellow freshman can make it back to Congress in 2012.

“Obviously this isn’t just about raising money this is about having a good time,” Denham said. “We have a great entertainer here in Grammy Award winner LeAnn Rimes. And we’re excited about that, and excited about the event tonight.”

Denham vowed that tea partiers — who helped elect a good bit of this class — would be able to afford the event if they wanted to attend.

When asked if this was a bid to establish himself as a rainmaker, he said it was an “opportunity for me to show some leadership.”

Then he was asked whether this kind of event could be considered politically tone deaf.

“Have you heard Leann Rimes?” he said, to a chorus of laughs, vowing that country music is “all-American.”
