I guess Janet Napolitano was right. Domestic terrorists seem to be on a marked rise lately. In each case, they claim their actions were "justified". These assassins were motivated by politics (right-wing) and religion. Napolitano was roundly attacked for her report on this very subject and was forced to retract it. I guess that was a bit premature. She was right.

WASHINGTON – An 88-year-old gunman with a violent and virulently anti-Semitic past opened fire with a rifle inside the crowded U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum on Wednesday, fatally wounding a security guard before being shot himself by other officers, authorities said.

The assailant was hospitalized in critical condition, leaving behind a sprawling investigation by federal and local law enforcement and expressions of shock from the Israeli government and a prominent Muslim organization.

Washington Police Chief Cathy Lanier said the gunman was "engaged by security guards immediately after entering the door" with a rifle. "The second he stepped into the building he began firing."

Law enforcement officials said James W. von Brunn, a white supremacist, was under investigation in the shooting and that his car was found near the museum and tested for explosives. The weapon was a .22-caliber rifle, they added. They spoke on condition of anonymity, saying they were not authorized to discuss the investigation just beginning.

When von Brunn was captured he possessed a list he had made of lawmakers on Capitol Hill, according to another law enforcement officer who requested anonymity. The purpose of the list was not immediately clear, the official said.

The dead guard, Stephen Tyrone Johns, 39, was a six-year veteran of the facility who lived in Temple Hills, Md. Museum Director Sara Bloomfield said he "died heroically in the line of duty."

At the White House, just blocks away from the museum, President Barack Obama said: "This outrageous act reminds us that we must remain vigilant against anti-Semitism and prejudice in all its forms. No American institution is more important to this effort than the Holocaust Museum, and no act of violence will diminish our determination to honor those who were lost by building a more peaceful and tolerant world."

Von Brunn has a racist, anti-Semitic Web site and wrote a book titled "Kill the Best Gentiles," alleging a Jewish conspiracy "to destroy the white gene pool." Writings attributed to von Brunn on the Internet say the Holocaust was a hoax.

In 1983, he was convicted of attempting to kidnap members of the Federal Reserve Board and served more than six years in prison. He was arrested two years earlier outside the room where the board was meeting, carrying a revolver, knife and sawed-off shotgun. At the time, police said von Brunn wanted to take the members hostage because of high interest rates and the nation's economic difficulties.

"At Auschwitz the 'Holocaust' myth became Reality, and Germany, cultural gem of the West, became a pariah among world nations," it says.

The museum, which opened in 1993 and has drawn nearly 30 million visitors, houses exhibits and records relating to the Holocaust of more than a half century ago in which more than 6 million Jews died at the hands of Nazis. Its Web site says the museum "teaches millions of people each year about the dangers of unchecked hatred and the need to prevent genocide."

The museum was crowded with schoolchildren and other tourists at the time of the attack, but they all escaped injury in the outburst of violence.

Ashley Camp, 14, of Forsyth, Ill., on a field trip with more than 40 other students, said she heard two or three gunshots. Soon after, she recalled, a security guard ordered the group to run to the exit.

"We had to sprint as fast as we could out the door," she said. "I thought it was the movie (part of a museum exhibit), but then everyone started screaming and running."

The attack was the third in a recent wave of unsettling shootings that appeared to have political or ethnic underpinnings.

A 23-year-old Army private, William Andrew Long, was shot and killed outside a recruiting office this month in Arkansas and a fellow soldier was wounded. The suspect, a Muslim convert, has said he considers the killing justified because of the U.S. military presence in the Middle East.

Late last month, abortion provider Dr. George Tiller was shot to death in his church.

Johns, the security guard killed Wednesday, was black.

Only last week, Obama visited the site of a German concentration camp at Buchenwald in Germany where he noted, "There are those who insist the Holocaust never happened." He added, "This place is the ultimate rebuke to such thoughts, a reminder of our duty to confront those who would tell lies about our history."

In a statement from Israel's government, Information and Diaspora Minister Yuli Edelstein said the shooting was "further proof that anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial have not passed from the world."

And the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a prominent American Muslim organization, said in a statement, "We condemn this apparent bias-motivated attack and stand with the Jewish community and with Americans of all faiths in repudiating the kind of hatred and intolerance that can lead to such disturbing incidents."

Within minutes after the attack, federal agents were dispatched to von Brunn's condominium in Annapolis, Md., to check his computer. A neighbor, Harold Olynnger, said in an interview that he and his wife had not been allowed back in their condo since early afternoon because agents feared the suspect's home might contain explosives.

Joseph Persichini, assistant director in charge of the Washington FBI field office, said the shootings were being investigated as a possible hate crime or a case of domestic terrorism.

According to a relative, von Brunn attended Washington University in St. Louis and is an artist.

Navy records show von Brunn enlisted in 1942 as an apprentice seaman before accepting an appointment as a naval midshipmen in the volunteer reserves in March 1943. On his application for enlistment, the 21-year-old listed his reason for signing up as "patriotic." His records show he had language qualifications in both English and French after spending three years in college. He was discharged from the Navy in 1956.

A cousin, Virginia Gerker of St. Louis, said in an interview she hadn't seen him in 50 years. She said her family had "disowned" him and believed him to be mentally ill.

About a dozen years ago, he applied to have his art shown at a gallery in Easton, Md., according to two of the owners. Laura Era and Jennifer Wharton said they rejected his work and he stomped out.

Mark Potok of the Southern Poverty Law Center said von Brunn's Web site has long been listed as a hate site.

"We've been tracking this guy for decades," said Heidi Beirich, director of research for the law center's Intelligence Project, which tracks hate crimes. "He thinks the Jews control the Federal Reserve, the banking system, that basically all Jews are evil."

The Rev. David Ostendorf, executive director of the Center for a New Community in Chicago, a national civil rights group, said von Brunn has described in his own writings a long relationship with Willis Carto, founder of the Liberty Lobby, the Spotlight Newspaper and a well-known white supremacist and anti-Semite.

Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe has directed that flags fly at half-staff today to honor Private William Long, a new soldier who was fatally shot outside an Army-Navy recruiting center last week. Long's funeral is today.

Meanwhile more details are emerging about the Muslim convert accused in the killing. Defendant Abdul-hakim Muhammad was in a Little Rock courtroom Friday morning to have a defense attorney formally appointed to his case.

Muhammad, who was previously known as Carlos Bledsoe, has pleaded not guilty to capital murder. He stood silently during the court hearing, though lawyer Jim Hensley had said previously that his client had wanted to make a statement or hold a news conference to "explain himself."

The suspect had apparently told investigators he wanted to kill as many Army personnel as he could "because of what they had done to Muslims in the past." And a law enforcement official confirms that an FBI-led terrorism task force has been investigating Muhammad since he returned to the U.S. from Yemen. The official says Muhammad had been arrested and jailed while in Yemen for using a Somali passport.

Robert Spencer, director of Jihad Watch, says the suspect had at one time been a business student at Tennessee State University. "I think that he was turned against America by those who converted him to Islam and those who he fell in with after he converted because they were able to make use of the anti-American rhetoric that the Jihadists frequently employ," he contends.

Muhammad's lawyer has said that while in prison in Yemen, the suspect faced torture and beatings from jailers, prisoners, or both that left him scarred. But a Yemeni embassy official has denied those allegations.

The founder of Planned Parenthood did not support abortion. Sort of takes the wind out of that sail.

In a chapter from Woman and the New Race (1920) entitled "Contraceptives or Abortion?," Sanger wrote,
"While there are cases where even the law recognizes an abortion as justifiable if recommended by a physician, I assert that the hundreds of thousands of abortions performed in America each year are a disgrace to civilization."

Roger Streitmatter has claimed that Sanger's opposition to abortion stemmed primarily from a concern for the dangers to the mother rather than moral issues.[33] Nonetheless, in her 1938 autobiography, Sanger notes that her 1916 opposition to abortion was based on the taking of life: "To each group we explained what contraception was; that abortion was the wrong way—no matter how early it was performed it was taking life; that contraception was the better way, the safer way—it took a little time, a little trouble, but was well worth while in the long run, because life had not yet begun."

H.G. Wells, Woodrow Wilson, Teddy Roosevelt, George Bernard Shaw, among others also believed in the now historically discredited non-scientific belief called "Eugenics". It reached it zenith in the early 20th century.

"Hatred" is a strong word. Simply stating facts does not equate hatred.

A Muslim fanatic killing soldiers using his opposition to our foreign policy as a justification constitutes assassination based on religious extremism. His ideology is hardly "leftist".

Oh, and Mr. Von Brunn was affiliated with quite a number of Right wing groups. I did not just make that up. Check for yourself.

Nor are Muslim extremists among the "right wing" identities enumerated in Napolitano's slur against veterans, gun owners, and anybody that speaks their opinion against the left.

Hatred is an emotion regularly displayed by members of the left. It fits, regardless of its harshness.

He was a senile German racist. You want to say that racists are only in the right wing?
''I think that he was turned against America by those who converted him to Islam and those who he fell in with after he converted because they were able to make use of the anti-American rhetoric'''

Like the kind the libs put out. The 'sorry' tour, and calling soldiers murderers, must have really helped.
I couldn't beleive that happened at the Holocaust museum. I was on my way home from Russleville where I had been taking pop shots at all the illegal immigrants down there. I heard it on the news during a break on the Mark Levin show where he had been urging me to switch my hatred from mexicans to blacks for awhile. Now this guy goes on does this.Me and my right wing buddies are really getting are message across. Roll Eyes
I don't know why it has to be that involved anyway. Let's say, I have no loved ones, I lost my job and I'm dying of cancer...what's stopping me from walking up to any political public figure with dynamite around my chest and saying good-bye? I'm just saying why does anything political or religious have to be involved in my decision to do something normal in the offender's head but insane to everyone else? I can't believe these situations haven't already happened in this country on that type of scale. We're still at the "walking into your ex-employer's business and shooting everyone" stage, but I bet it progresses.
I wish to remind everyone that in Europe, anti-Semitism is as much a left wing attribute. Von Brunn was a pro-socialist, vehemently anti-Christian, as well as, a hater of Jews. I hope this message gets out and the results are rubbed in the faces of a few left wingers who jumped in feet first with out checking for obstacles such as the truth.

Von Brunn wrote a book called “Kill the Best Gentiles.” You may find a portion of the work here:

The work is a miasma of conspiratorial histrionics. He states Christianity is a Jewish plot to destroy Western Civilization and that socialism is the future and hope of Western Civilization.

So, von Brunn was anti-Christian, ant-Semitic, anti-Capitalist, and pro-socialism. Right wing, not! A terrorist nut burger, definitely!

First of all, cutting and pasting snippets from such ambiguous sources as Wikipedia (directly from where your post has been taken) is not exactly providing reliable or truthful information. That is why they have this disclaimer on the very article you cited:

"This article may contain inappropriate or misinterpreted citations that do not verify the text. "

If you are going to take your dubious information from Wikipedia, then copy the whole article. You left out the parts where Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood, believed in negative eugenics: using contraception to prevent the breeding of who and what she considered inferior: blacks, Jews, aborigines, the "feeble-minded," the physically unfit..."

Pasting quotes from a left wing racist does not exactly take "the wind out of the sails" of the silent domestic terrorism called abortion. In fact, your argument blows.

Eugenics and euthanasia
Sanger was a proponent of negative eugenics, a social philosophy which claims that human hereditary traits can be improved through social intervention. Methods of social intervention (targeted at those seen as "genetically unfit") advocated by some negative eugenicists have included selective breeding, sterilization and euthanasia. In A Plan for Peace (1932), for example, Sanger proposed a congressional department to:

Keep the doors of immigration closed to the entrance of certain aliens whose condition is known to be detrimental to the stamina of the race, such as feebleminded, idiots, morons, insane, syphilitic, epileptic, criminal, professional prostitutes, and others in this class barred by the immigration laws of 1924.[20]

And, following:

Apply a stern and rigid policy of sterilization and segregation to that grade of population whose progeny is already tainted or whose inheritance is such that objectionable traits may be transmitted to offspring.[21]

In 1939 Margaret Sanger started “The Negro Project”. She enlisted black preachers to support sterilization. The plan was shown in a letter to Clarence Gamble of the Procter and Gamble Empire,

We should hire three or four colored ministers, preferably with social-service backgrounds, and with engaging personalities. The most successful educational approach to the Negro is through a religious appeal. We do not want word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population and the minister is the man who can straighten out that idea if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members.[22][23]

Her first pamphlet read:

It is a vicious cycle; ignorance breeds poverty and poverty breeds ignorance. There is only one cure for both, and that is to stop breeding these things. Stop bringing to birth children whose inheritance cannot be one of health or intelligence. Stop bringing into the world children whose parents cannot provide for them. Herein lies the key of civilization. For upon the foundation of an enlightened and voluntary motherhood shall a future civilization emerge.[24]

Sanger saw birth control as a means to prevent "dysgenic" children from being born into a disadvantaged life, and dismissed "positive eugenics" (which promoted greater fertility for the "fitter" upper classes) as impractical. Though many leaders in the negative eugenics movement were calling for active euthanasia of the "unfit," Sanger spoke out against such methods. She believed that women with the power and knowledge of birth control were in the best position to produce "fit" children. She rejected any type of eugenics that would take control out of the hands of those actually giving birth.
How did these radical or right wing groups and individuals get the conservative label? They have made their threats and allegations against everyone from all political parties and affiliations. Their beliefs reflect none of the political or philosophical beliefs of any liberal or conservative ideology. Most, in fact, nearly all, claim they are independent and find no association with any government and are, in fact, anti-government. How did they get labeled conservative? They are neo-nasty hate mongers.

No, but two assassinations in a week based on right-wing political ideology does. Please note that I stated the assassins were motivated by politics AND religion.

So, to prevent this from happening in the future, which one should we get rid of first, right-wing political ideology or religion? If these are so dangerous when combined, then one or the other, or perhaps both, need to be outlawed.

Um moelarry, you got it all wrong here. It was not right wing political ideology that lead to the shooting at the museum. Not sure if you read the link..Von Braun was more of a left wing nut. Where's meanie snake now?

Holocaust Museum shooter von Brunn a 9/11 'truther' who hated 'neo-cons', Bush, McCain

The man accused of opening fire at the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC on June 10, James W. von Brunn, left a trail of unhinged writings around the internet.

The anti-semitism of von Brunn is the first thing one notices when visiting these bizarre websites. However, like those of most "white supremacists", many of von Brunn's political views track "Left" rather than "Right." Clearly, a re-evaluation of these obsolete definitions is long overdue.

For example, he unleashed his hatred of both Presidents Bush and other "neo-conservatives" in online essays. As even some "progressives" such as the influential Adbusters magazine publicly admit, "neoconservative" is often used as a derogatory code word for "Jews". As well, even a cursory glance at "white supremacist" writings reveals a hatred of, say, big corporations that is virtually indistinguishable from that of anti-globalization activists.

James von Brunn's advocacy of 9/11 conspiracy theories also gives him an additional commonality with individuals on the far-left.

None of this will surprise readers of Jonah Goldberg's bestseller Liberal Fascism: The Secret History of the American Left, From Mussolini to the Politics of Change , which clearly demonstrates that "fascism" of the kind advocated by the British National Party (BNP) and the likes of James W. von Brunn is just as likely to reflect "leftwing" views as "rightwing" ones.

In fact, anti-semitism is something the New Left and the "Far Right" have had in common since the 1980s, which is why so many former leftists like David Horowitz defected from one side to the other during the Reagan era and beyond. It also helps explain the otherwise baffling alliance between the Left and radical Islam.

That this shooting occurred shortly after President Obama's former mentor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, blamed "the Jews" for his lack of access to his former parishioner is a troubling confluence of events as well.
“Oh, and Mr. Von Brunn was affiliated with quite a number of Right wing groups. I did not just make that up. Check for yourself.

No, but two assassinations in a week based on right-wing political ideology does. Please note that I stated the assassins were motivated by politics AND religion.”

Lady snake,

I believe you owe a retraction for these two statements.

As I posted:

As my own research shows, he was a Darwinian. He hated neocons and considered the conservative magazine “The Weekly Standard” as a legitimate target of his hatred.

None of these attributes are characteristic of US conservatives, but most definitely on the left.

The left has long had its own racist, bigoted, loons down on religion. Historically, in Europe, some of the worst violence was the internecine warfare between factions of the left.
Its totally disingenuous to suggest that Von Brunn is a leftist. Own your people my friends. All that silly Rush Limbaugh crazy speak about the right-wing extremists really being leftists is beyond stupid. There are different types of right wing extremism. It is not JUST associated with economic policy and political philosophy, but can just as easily apply to immigration, civil rights, religious bigotry, homophobia, anti-Semitism, among other aspects of domestic social policy. There are far right elements in Socialism, Communism, Fascism, Capitalism, Democratic Republics, Monarchy, and every other form of governance and economic structure. Get real. To try and place the KKK and the Neo-Nazis into the mold of a U.S. "liberal" is too dumb to believe. Hitler was a Socialist. He was also an anti-Semitic, Xenophobe who approved the gassing of minorities including gypsies and homosexuals. The extreme right in America has historically hated gays, blacks, Jews,Catholics and immigrants. I doubt very seriously if Mr. Von Brunn voted for Obama, supported gay marriage, or Jews working in or owning the terrifying MSM and their work in the financial sector. His hatred of former President Bush could have been because Bush was far too liberal. He did hire Condi Rice, Colin Powell, and a whole host of Jews. Sorry

By the way - Wikipedia has these little numbers by the verified information which links you to the citation. If it does not it says "citation needed". If you can disprove that Margaret Sanger was opposed to abortion and that she did not make the statement I gave - prove it. Pay attention.

We most always disagreed, but I still respected you because (most of the time) you were intelligent enough to back up your opinion with more than just ad hominem garbage.

I just lost that respect.

I could say the exact same thing only substituting left for right in your little rant. Only I would not say "Get real," because that is sooo high school.
The problem with the post is in an attempt to gain political capitol both sides are attempting to take two incidents and create a some the appearance of some huge systemic problem that is at any moment about to undermine our entire way of life. It's fear mongering it is perpetrated by both sides and we all fall prey to it.

Each of us wants our side to be right, our beliefs to be vindicated and in that desire the politicians put their bridles in our mouths so that they may lead us where they wish. If I criticize Bush policies I do not agree with I am a far left nut job, if I criticize Obama policies I am a far right nut job. Why do I have to chose a camp? Can't I stand and say spending no matter which camp is doing it is out of control, putting us in debt so far that there is no way to get out with out massive inflation and taxation, that rushing to war with out good provocation is foolish, that pulling out with out stabilizing a country is bad, the problem is there is no party for me. I am fiscally conservative, I also understand that we must not in our prosperity forget those less fortunate, but the current programs are but chains of bondage to poverty.

The experiment of new deal has not brought people out of poverty but robbed them of the will to prosper. We have an entire country with an entitlement attitude, republican and democrat alike. Those in Washington have so far polarized us that we can no longer see our brother and sister, our fellow American, instead we see an enemy that must be defeated.

I blame both parties that take turns robbing the pockets of the American people to pay for their own agendas. Where is the party of statesmen, the party that will say tough times are upon us and we must now pay the price of our foolish gluttony. We have gorged on the prosperity of this country and it has cost us, we have indulged ourselves to the point that we forget the price that freedom and prosperity come at.

I am so sick and tired of Left and Right, so sick and tired of the rhetoric that both sides spew. They tell us what we want to hear and we gladly gobble it up at the slop line of our favorite pundit or politician.

We must remember that we the people are in charge. We must take back our country by putting into place statesmen who will cut programs, cut spending and make tough decisions we will not like because they will hurt. It's time to stand up and say my voice matters and I can make a difference. The middle of the road is the usable surface, we have shifted from far right to far left and need a party to steer us back to the center.

I apologize for my rambling long winded post…
