The Shoals needs a gay pride event that will allow the growing number of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) citizens of the Shoals to come out and be proud of their sexual orientation and gender identity along with the LGBT students of UNA.

It will allow other people of the Shoals to experience the LGBT community in a fun and festive way. The event could include a block party for everyone to come out to and enjoy music, entertainment, food, adult beverages and LGBT education and vendors.

Hey, here's another suggestion. Let's just have a big ole celebration, everyone in town will be invited. There will be games, and parades, and cotton candy. We can dance in the streets to the wee hours of the night and drink beer and have a good ole time. And nobody has to ask nor find out anybody else's sexuality. Why is it so important to flaunt it? Just do whatever you feel justified in doing, in the privacy of your bedroom or kitchen or wherever. We don't have to have a Straight Sex Celebration day or parade. let's just live in harmony without having to know each other's "business", doesn't that sound better?

I agree 100%!
How about we don't and say we did....or better yet, how bout we don't and say we didn't. I have a gay friend or two and I definitely do not judge them or think any differently of them as a person, but sin is sin is sin. Sodom and Gomorrah were judged and destroyed and this is one of the reasons they were destroyed. If America doesn't turn back to God and away from sins like this, and God doesn't destroy America, He will have to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah on judgement day.

Oh, and if you didn't know...God doesn't make mistakes and won't have to apologize to anyone on judgement day...so you see what is going to happen
Hey, here's another BETTER suggestion. Let's just have a big ole GAY celebration, everyone in town will be invited INCLUDING THE GAYS FOR ONCE. There will be GAY games, and GAY parades, and RAINBOW cotton candy. We can dance in the streets AND THE GAYS CAN DANCE TOO to the wee hours of the night and drink beer and have a good ole GAY time. And nobody has to ask nor find out anybody else's sexuality BECAUSE YOU WILL ALREADY KNOW BECAUSE ITS A GAY EVENT. Why is it so important to flaunt it? ANSWER: BECAUSE GAYS ARE HEAVILY DISCRIMINATED AGAINGST. Just do whatever you feel justified in doing, in the privacy of your bedroom or kitchen or wherever AND EVEN IN PUBLIC BECAUSE THIS IS FREE COUNTRY. We don't have to have a Straight Sex Celebration day (WHICH IS EVERY DAY IN THE US) or parade. let's just live in harmony (WELL LETS NOT KID OURSELVES BECAUSE GAYS ARE DISCRIMINATED AGAINST SO THERE IS NO HARMONY) without having to know each other's "business", doesn't that sound better NO IT DOESN'T SOUND BETTER?

Well said Christian Warrior of the Westboro Baptist Church. I am not a christian and don't believe in your world view so I don't see it as a sin, just the way I am. So I don't think I will be seeing anyone on judgement day because there won't be one.

If you don't like a gay pride event then you can always stay at home and read your bible or something, you don't have to go, attendance isn't mandatory.

I'm not gay, but if you do get this organized can I be Grand Marshal?

Just so you know, I want a rainbow flag float, not to be driven...no, no, no...I want my float - with me on it - to be carried by six toned and tanned Greek god types who've seen every episode of Designing Women and Golden Girls, and own every Streisand album.

Let me know.

Yeah! What they said!

I have a number of friends that are gay, good folks that I respect, but they don't run around yelling "I'M GAY, DEAL WITH IT." They live their lives like regular couples, hold hands, steal a kiss from time to time. No one really complains (there is a whisper or two every once and awhile). AND THIS IS IN THE SOUTH.

I've got news for you, those of you that think you have to march in the streets do more harm to your cause than you do good. You are not going to force acceptance of those that disagree with you by shoving it in their face. Everyone knows you're out there, no need to scream it from the top of your lungs. Let society adapt and the old beliefs slip away as they have with every other taboo that has gone by the wayside (interracial marriage comes time mind).

And buttercup - I aint carrying your float, Im riding on it with you!

Good points & very true.

You forgot about Liza! Big Grin
UncleGus.....No, I already loaned it out, but I have a nice pair of leather chaps and vest you can wear for the parade. I bet you'll be all the rage.

Pickler.....I am breathless that you would even think of us having such a fine celebration on that day. Is there anything of interest going on that Friday????? Big Grin. Don't worry if I die before then, I will be sure and leave you at least a pair of the tickets so you can go in my memory. Take Gus with you, but make him wear the chaps and vest....haha

HEY.... don't you need to send someone to take pictures to make sure EVERYBODY gets to see???
OK PowerGen,
here's your chance. You will need to go the City of Florence and obtain the permit. Buttercup can be listed of grand Master of the Parade. She has already picked her court and those appointed to carry her along the way. The pink unicorns are not currently in season, but with a little luck we may be able to round some up. I have a Barry Manilow tape we can use, if we can find an 8 track, so no need to list a band for the parade. Uncle Gus has offered to march along in the balck leather chaps and vest while singing "Y.M.C.A", and we also have some photgraphers who have volunteered their time and efforts. BTW just don't hold it on ballgame day, some of us have other things to do.... Wink
I say go for it, all they can say is no.

Like one of the other posters said, you need to spend more time enjoying yourself than trying to ramrod your lifestyle choice onto others. All of this is said in fun and jest, and though I may not condone it, I have no pobelm with what you and or significant other may practice. That is for someone else to judge. i do howver have a problem with specific parades and festivals held to promote that lifestyle. Not every day is Straight Sex Day, despite what you may think. Keep your bedroom time at home in the bedroom, and then I won't have to comment upon it.

It would be painful to be tethered to leo and nagle.

Do you have a problem with the African American's rallying for their rights in the 1960's? This is, after all, a civil rights issue.

Tell me, other than marriage, what 'rights' you perceive are being violated that would allow you to compare your movement to the civil rights movement? Do we have 'gay' drinking fountains? 'Gay' seats at the back of the bus? 'Gay' back doors to enter stores and restaurants? Please, I am sypathetic to your cause to a point, but dont go comparing your issues to that of the civil rights movement.

You have control of your outward appearance. Other than the marriage issue, which in my opinion was addressed in your right to civil unions, as a whole the population of the US is not out to trample on the rights of a gay person.

IMHO, the only thing your cause wants to accelerate is the acceptance of the gay lifestyle. Thats not going to happen through Gay Marches and Rallys. Its going to happen through the attrition of those that dont believe what you do. And it will NEVER go away completely, because, unlike the color of a persons skin, the Bible specifically speaks to it being a sin. So a good majority of the population may not ever accept you.

And guess what, its their right not to.....

Jeepin'
First off, I am not gay. Just because someone believes they should have rights makes them gay?

You make it sound like a petty issue when it is not. There are serious issues, like gay individuals not being able to get on their partner's medical insurance plan, gays not being able to serve their country in the military, and gays being discriminated against at school or work.

Gays being able to serve in the military was (poorly) addressed in dont ask, dont tell, and is now being readdressed through Conress and the courts. Gay marches have done nothing to help that issue, acceptance has changed that line of thinking. And I am ex military, so I know what I speak of.....

Insurance issues were addressed through your right to a civil union.

There are laws in place to prevent discrimination against you in work and school. Even elevates it to a hate crime.

All these issues you mentioned have been addressed. So, what are we Rallying against again? Ohhh, thats right, non acceptance by the population at large. Good luck with that. It just makes those that dont like you not like you even more.

Hows that working out for you?
