Speaking as a former LEO, and the husband to a wife that lived with domestic violence for almost  20 years in a previous marriage, when folks are 'forced' to remain together, tempers can flare, even among friends, and especially among family members.  Add the statistical fact that, on average, fewer than 3 out of 10 cases of domestic violence are ever reported. To put that in perspective, data from 2017 showed over 10,000 reported cases of DV in JUST West Tennessee for the year. That implies that over 30,000 cases went unreported. And THAT was only for PART of the state.

I'm going to assume you really want to know and aren't being a smart ass:  Have you ever known anyone that needed to go to the doctor, but didn't; they decided to 'just tough it out'? Victims of domestic violence are a lot like that. My wife 'chose' to live with physical and mental abuse for 20 years.  She never told anyone; for multiple reasons;  and for over 10 of those years she worked in the court system.  Until  you understand the dynamics  of Domestic Violence you can't understand the 'whys'.
