The Truth Sometimes Hurts!

By Joseph M. Cachia

As the Western media turns its attention to and prattles about the fate of the 15 Britons detained for allegedly trespassing into Iranian waters, the status of the five Iranian officials captured in a US military raid on a liaison office in Northern Iraq on January 11, remains a mystery.

The Iranians were legally and openly in Iraq. It was a long establish office that Iranians had visited to promote and oversee trade and visa's for pilgrims that go to Holy Sites in both countries. The US was trying to capture high Iranian officials who happened n to be there at the time. Bush is looking for an ecuse to attack Iran and has been making charges about Iranian involvement in attacks against the US forces but the attacks are coming mainly from the Sunni. Iran is Shiite, who the Sunni's are also fighting. But logic was never one of Bush's strong points.

Juan Cole, the British paper the "Independent" and Andrew C.o.c.k.b.u.r.n seemed to believe the two incidents are related. I bet they are but the Iranians backed down, very wisely. Blair dropped his threats and sent a high British official to negotiate. Who knows what deals or agreements were made behind the scenes?

Some were speculating that the capture was to make sure the British intended to leave Southern Iraq soon, as Blair has announced. If Bush attacks Iran the Shiites in the South are likely to rise up against British forces.

Maybe it wasn't related. Sometimes it takes a while before we learn the truth.
