Obvious violations of rule one and three, and possibly two.

1. Always point the muzzle in a safe direction; never point a firearm at anyone or anything you don't want to shoot.

2. Keep your finger off the trigger and outside the trigger guard until you are ready to shoot.

3. Keep the action open and the gun unloaded until you are ready to use it.

And any firearm supposed to be used for blanks should be marked as such, and made incapable of firing real ammunition...it's not rocket science...any gunsmith can manage it.

Of course, I once owned a French military rifle. It had never been fired, and only dropped once! Big Grin
Blank rounds are pretty obvious, they have no bullets on top of the cartridge case. Automatic weapons require a blank adapter to cycle rounds thru the action. The adapter sets on the front of the muzzle to capture gas and to make the automatic function work. No bullets could go through an adapter.

Something stinks with this story and it isn't french cheese.
