170 miles down the road, announce on May 1, 2007, that they are buying the land and closing the deal on August 1, 2007. Indoor water park, indoor 18 hole golf course, indoor Ice Palace, indoor Lagoons and Waterways, indoor Botanical Gardens, Casinos and Hotel, and so on and so on, fun for the whole family, how are we going to compete with that. I heard that someone was going to build a water park near Spring Park in Tuscumbia. Does anyone know the status of that? I have two teenagers and it sure would be great if they had a few more places in the Shoals for recreation. Right now there are not too many places kids can go and have a good time. I think a nice water park, complete with a wave pool and fun slides, etc. would be a welcome addition to our community. I wouldn't mind helping to fund something like this with a short-term tax bill if the local governments would get behind a project like this. I think a project like this would very soon pay for itself and benefit local businesses as well as the whole community.

Very good point...

Luncheons and meetings don't always bring in the business, most of the time it just makes 'expense accounts' go up...

Spring Park would be an ideal place for a Water Park and a skate park.
The Teens and college students will never have more than whats here now. The powers that be in this area have one thing in their narrow minds, and thats to make this a retirement community. How can you bring in tourism or new business if at the same time you are wanting people to retire here. Teens in this area are going to college to get out of the Shoals area.

I did, I had to if I wanted to make a decent living for my family. I love my hometown, but it is economically dead as doornail. The problem I see is that the Government there isn't pro-business, I know that is stating the obvious, but look around. Florence/The Shoals, and it pains me to say this, is not moving ahead.

Again. What are they waiting on? What is holding them back? If the people don't eventually speak out en masse, I see absolutely zero motivation for these flat tires to move forward with progressive capitalistic policies. Meanwhile my beloved Shoals continues to wither on the vine.

Why couldn't Alabama, specifically our area, move forward with a project like this?

And shouldn't the good people of the Shoals/Florence ask their leadership this question?

GREAD< GREAD< GREAD! All I hear is people around here wishing money away from the poor people of Mississippi. Whats wrong, don't y'all want Mississippi kids to have a great education?
Don't you want Mississippi to have 4 lane highways, and lots of Interstates? Don't you want Mississippi to benefit from car factories?

Roll Eyes (Actually I wish I could find one of these that was a tongue in cheek, and I would put it right here)

Harvey Robbin was exploring the idea of building a water park in the area but from what i hear any plans like that have been scrapped.
Who's they? That's whats gets me about all those who say "they" should do this and "they" should do that. Its not the City, County or States job to go into retail, entertainment or any other venture unless its need service for the community.

So those that want something in the Shoals, go take out a loan, convince investors to back you and put in a night club for college kids or a water park. That's what they did in Tunica, not the Tunica government- private enterprise did!
LOL,LOL, sorry to remind you ,but the ever so famous "they" have to issue the building permits, issue the lisences, etc. So yes indeed the "they" have the last word if ANYONE had the money or the investors to take on the projects themselves. All the money in the world ain't gonna do any good unless such ventures are approved by the famous "they".

Memphis is a pretty rough place to live/work. GSA perdeim rate is $132 a day. Few of the folks that build this think will ever see the pd money and yet have to rent $1700 a month apartments to stay in a safe neighborhood.

That can be said about any town/city in the country. Even here in Florence. You dont have to have a casino in your town to have a bad if not dangerous part of town.
Just a comment on living in the Memphis area.
I lived there for 20 years. I was not a big fan of Memphis, but the cost of living in Memphis is not as great as you seem to have stated. In fact I found that Memphis is not much more expensive than living here. Different things cheaper, different things more expensive. Yes, Memphis can be dangerous if you are in the wrong section at the wrong time of day. One thing, their water is a helluva lot better tasting than here. One of only 2 things I miss. (The other is trucks on virtually every street selling cantelopes 3 for a dollar)

Even cheaper to live is across the state line in Mississippi as far as housing. Those construction workers may be in better shape than you think.

I love Memphis.

Memphis is high... and if one is not careful and tries to save money they can get themselves in a horrible neighborhood... I would pay the extra for safety.

Wasn't that thing listed on eBay at one time?
