Looks like highway 72 is about to get busier with Alabama residents going to spend their money in another state! I know alot of people that go to Tennessee for lottery tickets and there are alot of people that gave up the dog track in Birmingham to go to the casinos in Mississippi. I don't get to the track often but when I do go it is obvious, from looking at all the empty seats in what used to be a packed house, that all the money from Alabama is going to other states now.

Alabama the beautiful...........the beautiful state to pass through on your way to Six Flags, the casinos, buy lottery tickets, or the beaches.
Wow, that place looks amazing. I would love to have a place like that (casino and all) in the Shoals area. However, good luck getting that here because, as someone said above, until people realize that they don't have to vote a certain way to be christian, then it won't happen.

The same people who want the government to tell us we can't drink on Sunday, or we can't gamble are the ones who cry foul when the government tries to mingle into other areas of our lives such as gun control, or regulating what religious material can be taught in school.

The churches have a good strategy, in alot of Alabama areas, with ordinances stating how far a business that serves alchohol or has half nekked wimmen dancing can be from a church. There are so many in Alabama that it leaves very few places for those businesses to start. Funny thing is though that they can form wherever they want. A few years ago a church moved in between Mr Norm's and Darby Drive Pkg. I believe it may have even been where Side Pockets is now. Also, there was one and may still be one in the old PJ's building on Avalon in MSC, not far from the pkg store on Wilson Dam Road.

As far as the lottery, I've always said that if I hit it in Tennessee there's no way I going to spend it in Alabama. I thought I might just buy a bunch of land in Tennessee. I wonder if I dropped a wad of that sinful money into some of the offerring plates how many of them would refuse it?

I thought churches were a place for sinners to get together to praise God. So why do they want to keep what they consider "sinners" out of the state?
For you young people who don't remember, Tunica county was once the poorest county in the poorest state in the Nation. That's right- dead last. News media even came to Tunica co. to cronicle just how bad it was. People living without running water, sewers were open ditches, etc. It was awful.
Well go there now and take a look. It ain't that way no more! If you are on a 2 way highway in Miss. you should be prepared for construction ahead- yea they are 4 laining like crazy over there.
I will never understand why this state turned down the lottery. What's wrong with making money? This bunch just wants to take it away from us via property taxes.

VERY well said!!!! Alabama had BETTER start keeping up with the times, and going FORWARD instead of BACKWARD because the preacher said so...

That is just Exactly the mindset that went on in Mississippi back during those extremely poor days... yep, the preacher told them what to do also!!!

OMG!!!!!! ARE you telling me that CHURCHES would TAKE monies received from gambling????? Tell me it ain't so, Ethyl!!!! Surely they would "practice what they preach" and call it sin money like you said... NO WAY would they accept it, they would give that five grand BACK to you.... YEAH RIGHT!!!!!! Roll Eyes
Folks, the outsider again.

Gambling is a personal Choice. IT IS ALSO A BUSINESS THAT HAS LITTLE IMPACT ON ENVIRONMENTS. Las Vegas, Nevada, exists because of gambling. It would have been Henderson, not Las Vegas, except the CHURCHES OF HENDERSON SAID NO. Las Vegas, half the size had a tenth the churches, there were not enough suckers in Las Vegas to support them. There are now, but the suckers are supporting the casinos. Suckers from China, India, Japan, France, Germany and all points of the compass. I have been to Alabama, you have the perfect combination of Climate, and scenery to become a mecca for tourists. About the only things you don't have is ski resorts and Hot Springs that have been developed.

Very well said. The same people who are so concerned with keeping gambling out (conservative christian right) are often the ones you hear (when not in church) talking about a need to do away with the welfare system, etc. Oh irony of ironies.
Every Wednesday, and Every Friday I pray to God that I will win the lottery. After a year of frustration and dismay I added to my prayer, God, why are you not letting me win the lottery.

God said, STUPID, BUY A TICKET. That is all I have ever heard from God by the way. It meansm, If you want to win, you have to play. It also means if you don't want to play, DON'T CRY WHEN YOU DON'T WIN.

GAMBLING IS AN ISSUE FOR PEOPLE TO DECIDE. CHURCH IS AN ISSUE FOR PEOPLE TO DECIDE.
That does not mean that Gambling is an issue for Church to decide.
If you personally find gambling SINFUL...don't gamble. IF YOU FIND GAMBLING SINFUL, DON'T ASK FOR A SHARE OF THE WINNINGS.
