The State of Alabama , at the constant railing of many of the preachers and churches , declined to vote for an educational lottery. Agged on by Ralph Reed of the Christian Colition who was really a lobbiest for the Indian's in Mississippi. Now the state wants to whine about not having any money for education. Cut teachers pay, make your kids bring toilet paper to school, double or triple our property taxes . Hell yea, listen to those preachers for political advise.

Meanwhile, up in Tennessee, the lottery passed , they have no state income taxes, and a record year for money coming for the lottery there and going to their educational coffers.

Do 'ya recken the state of Alabama could have used 323 Million dollars towards their educational fund?

Does anybody kinda feel stupid for voting against the lottery, or worse yet, assuming that it would pass and not going to vote at all ?

just wondering ????????????

Veep, I didn't know y'all didn't have a lotto....Um, MS doesn't either....

Ms has casino gambling, and since bingo is not a sin in Ms as it is in Al, a 37 mile drive to Iuka can scratch your bingo itch.  You are correct tho , no lottery in Ms.

Apparently in Alabama it is. Lying Bob Riley spent considerable state dollars prosecuting those running bingo halls. I believe the current excuse has also dedicated some time and money against that particular sin, but he may not be as aggressive as Lying Bob.

The mayor of Nashville is actually trying to increase property taxes by 53%. He claims that 600 teachers as well as other public employees would lose their job if it doesn't pass.

There was an effort to pass a state income tax in Tennessee, however it was local conservative talk show hosts and the same folks who would make up the Tea Party protests that fought against it. Fortunately, they won and we still don't have an income tax. Tennessee simply has more tourism revenue than Alabama so it's not needed. It's not because there is a state lottery.

I voted for the TN Lottery, but if I had it to do over again I would vote against it. It's one of those ideas that sounds good, but really isn't.

THOSE WERE NOT "BINGO" MACHINES! People seem to think these machines play just like regular Bingo. Not even close. THey are SLOT MACHINES with the word "Bingo" printed on them.

I'm not necessarily against Alabama taxing the stupid with a lottery or even gambling but it is quite dishonest to call these machines Bingo for the sole purpose of circumventing the law.

Alabama could definitely have used that money, but those "Alabama good ole boy" Christians can't let a lottery in here. If they did, everyone would go to Hell in  handbasket!

I voted for the lottery & would do so again & again.

First, thanks for the correction. My bad. However-----

In the overall scheme of life and death, does it really matter whether the machines were "bingo" , or cherries and apples. Gambling is not a sin. Screwed up Puritan ethics -- well, that's another thing.

Not all Christians believe that way Chick, I voted for the Lottery also when I was given a chance to but then I lived in Georgia then.  If though a Christian believes it to be sinful then I would encourage them to vote against it and respect their beliefs in doing so but I don't believe an educational lottery to be a sin.  When I purchase a ticket, usually only one at a time when I'm in Tennessee, I consider it a gift to the educational system for I honestly know my chances of winning and how my luck runs and I know chances are much better of getting struck by lightning than winning.

Where I see evil or wrong in it is when a person is so engrossed in gambling or spends money they don't have to spend in unrealistic hopes of getting rich and not having enough to feed their kids.  In those cases I feel it's wrong but those people need help for they will do that with something else anyway, most likely.  Just my opinion though.
