Though it targets Obama voters, you can walk down any street in America and get similarly uninformed answers from both sides.

This gives you an excellent view of what is wrong with America today. Though cherry picked and possibly exaggerated, there is still plenty of truth in this video. Just by voting for either a Democrat or Republican is a flashing sign. SSDD.
I will admit that among the general population the presidential election is similar to a popularity contest in high school. Most people don't do the independent research.

It is unfortunate that the American people force their multi-party system into a two party choice. But such is the fate of humanity.

I researched my choice, read the platform, and voted for Obama. But I will agree that many people either read junk or sold by lights and glamor.

The above link gives a summary of civic literacy test conducted between 2006 and 2007. 71% of Americans failed it averaging 49%. and less than half could name the three branches of government.

Think you can do better? Link I got 25.

I'm sorry, but your link isn't working. It refers to "www.americancivi****eracy.org" If you fill in the **** then we can check it out. Smiler

I've tried to get someone to tell why they voted for Obama. What did you like about his platform?

I can give individual quotes from “Report of the Platform Committee: Renewing America's Promise.” But for the sake of space I will paraphrase the reasons I voted for this platform. I will list section titles to which you can refer for some of my more specific agreements.

1. Affordable, Quality Health Care Coverage for All Americans
2. Opportunity for Women
3. A World Class Education for Every Child
4. Creating New Jobs by Rebuilding American Infrastructure
5. Restoring Fairness to our Tax Code
6. Smart, Strong, and Fair Trade Policies
7. Fiscal Responsibility
8. Win in Afghanistan
9. Do Right by Our Veterans
10. Allow All Americans to Serve
11. Reform Contracting Practices and Make Contractors Accountable
12. Stand with Allies and Pursue Diplomacy in the Middle East
13. Establish Energy Security
14. Lead to Combat Climate Change

These are some specific sections of the platform that attract my interest. There is much more to the platform. In general the platform provides a way for us to rebuild America. Just as our citizens have buried themselves in unsecured debt, our country has also slid further away from the financial security we once enjoyed. I cannot be unrealistic and expect our problems to be solved overnight. Andrew Jackson is the only president that paid off the national debt. But it is time we began to progress as we have in the past.

I can easily sit and debate what you may consider fair, such as returning higher taxes to those making over $250,000, but I do not think I can change your perception. I can only share my reasoning. If you wish we can discuss the specifics of these sections or you can read them yourself.

There was never any specifics on these subjects from obuma’s platform. More generalities than anything else. And what has happened to his agenda?
Link

Did women not have opportunities before obuma?

Is obuma admitting that our liberal controlled education system is a mess?

Is government hiring workers for infrastructure creating the kind of jobs that spur the economy? Well, no.

“Restoring fairness to our tax code” is democrat lingo for we’re going to sock it to the rich but the middle class is the ones who’ll get socked. The 250,00 threshold you speak of has already been reduced to 150,000 no wait, 100,000 no wait, make that 75,000 now.

Fiscal responsibility- that will be a first for a far left liberal democrat. It ain’t gonna happen.

Do right by our veterans.-that will be a first for a far left liberal democrat. Most democrats treat out veterans like dirt. It’s disgusting.

Allow all Americans to serve- you mean his forced to serve program.

Establish energy security- Somehow this means not drilling on our own soil while the Chinese are building rigs and drilling 90 miles off our shorelines.

Lead to combat climate change- Which has been proven to be a hoax.

Skymaster, did you miss school too? Good grammar and correct spelling might help me believe you. Look at what you wrote. Links. Not statements. Links. Did you read the platform? Did you read the Republican platform? Most of what you write are not even facts, but rather Internet rumors.

(1) Obama hasn't taken office and you haven't seen anything to judge results.
(2) The threshold remains at $250,000. You've been reading e-mail and reading propaganda sites.
(3) Bush, a Republican, has been the most fiscally liberal president in history. Facts and results prove that point.
(4) Veterans are suffering from the lack of services. I have a family member who is a doctor volunteering their time because the VA hospitals and benefits for veterans are at an all time low. (By the way, I believe McCain would have fixed this problem too.)
(5) Where in the world do you get "forced to serve?" I can't even address that issue. Do you expect a new draft to resolve Bush's issues?
(6) You obviously don't understand energy nor the limitations of Earth. If we began drilling today it would take 10 (TEN) years to get the first oil. We need to be undertaking alternative methods no matter what happens.
(7) I cannot even address the silliness of your message about climate change. What I have seen you write means you would not understand.
(8) If you are an example of a private school, I wouldn't let my child attend. I doubt you were. If you knew anything about education you would understand that parents are a major part of the child's education. My daughter went to public schools and actually started college in 7th grade because of her education. She is a junior in college at the age of 19 and on her way to medical school. It obviously served her way. But her parents cared.

I answered a civil question with a civil answer for NYTrooper. I have respect for him and he asked a fair question. Sir, you respond with typical (for you) uneducated insults rather than simply state your platform. Your ignorance deserves the same disrespect, as I have stated before. I do not take issue with people supporting John McCain. I have stated before that I respect all votes and voters. But you have shown your method of communication and I frankly disrespect it and you at this point.

My apologies to my intelligent friends who supported McCain. I have also read your platform and know that he and the GOP had good qualities as well. He probably would have made some changes to Bush's direction, but I didn't think it was enough for me to vote for McCain. You did and that is your right.

NYTrooper, my respectful friend, I will be glad to answer any questions you may have. None of this banter was intended for you.

Why don’t you just admit you were caught up in the obuma media hype and it best represents the reason you voted for him. You looked at his website instead of looking at his voting record which are two entirely different things. Count on a continuation of how he’s voted in the past. His voting record is not a good thing.

You don’t have a clue what obuma really believes in.

Drilling at Coal Oil Point in California could yield oil and gas in a couple of months. The equipment is nearby and available. Its called Coal Oil Point because about 100 barrels a day leaks from a nature fissure under the sea and has done so for a century or more. The ten years is rediculous on the face, as the Alaskan pipeline was build from scratch in much less time. Three years is a much more reasonable estimate.

Infrastructure construction will provide jobs, however, except for repairs and patches, not for several years. True, in the Depression, jobs were made overnight -- airports were built in a year, as was the Empire State Building. Because of the necessary permits, hearings and zoning requirements now required, two years will pass before one shovel of dirt is turned or one brick laid upon another. Liberals regulated such work to deathe. If one replies the regulations are necessary, observe the Empire State Building -- sturdily built, isn't it?

As the sun's waxing and waning of the solar winds is the main engine of climate change -- how does one purpose to change that -- a great shield in space?

As the planet has not experienced warming since 1995 or 1998 (estimates vary) the propaganda has gone from global warming to climate change -- its still major program to control the economy and provide tax dodges for such as Gore.
Howard,

Interesting. I'll admit I was not aware of Coal Oil Point. I personally support pulling as much oil as we can as long as we are working on an alternative source.

Another method, while it won't solve everything, is drawing on our natural gas. I agree with T. Boone Pickens on that point.

You are correct about the permits needed to start construction on everything. We will need to move quickly on red tape. Government tends to have a problem with moving quickly. But no matter what work we start, the red tape is the slowest part of the progress.

I disagree with you on global warming, but I understand your viewpoint. I guess you might call me gullable in your opinion, but in my opinion it exists. Either way, we will find out what happens.

I do agree Gore seems to have found a new career in his quest for global warming. I would like to think his intentions are good, but he is a politician.

At the end of the day I hope we are good stewards of what we have been given. We just disagree on what it takes to meet that objective.

I saw a film clip the other day of Bill Clinton, when he issued an executive order preventing drilling, he said "If we began drilling today it would take 10 (TEN) years to get the first oil."

What would we have now if we had started drilling then? Just a way for Democrats to put off the inevitable.
