Tim Robbins Speaks Out
to National Broadcasters
Dear Friends,
We encourage you to listen to FAIR advisory board member Tim Robbins' no-holds-barred speech on broadcasting and to pass it on to your friends.
A renowned actor, director and writer, Robbins used his keynote address at the National Association of Broadcasters conference on April 14 to speak out about the "dangerous lack of diversity of opinion" that characterizes the state of broadcasting today.

The speech is available on the FAIR website:

Robbins opened his speech "apologizing" to Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly and other right-wing broadcast pundits:

"A few years ago, they told America that because I had different opinions on the wisdom of going to war, that I was a traitor, a Saddam lover, a terrorist supporter, undermining the troops.

I was appealing at the time for the inspectors to have more time to find those Weapons of Mass Destruction. I was a naive dupe of left-wing appeasement.

And how right they were. If I had known then what I know now, if I had seen the festive and appreciative faces on the streets of Baghdad today, if I had known then what a robust economy we would be in -- the unity of our people, the wildfire of democracy that has spread across the Mideast -- I would never have said those traitorous, unfounded and irresponsible things.

I stand chastened in the face of the wisdom of the talk radio geniuses, and I apologize for standing in the way of freedom."
Lambasting the media for their failure to treat the Bush administration's lies about Iraqi WMDs with the scrutiny they had shown former President Bill Clinton's sex scandal, he calls on the nation's broadcasters to do a better job of upholding their responsibilities to the public. We have Freedom of Speech in this country. What isn't FAIR about that? Anyone - even Tim Robbins - who wants to speak can do so. Is the problem that there aren't any left-wing liberal talk radio shows? Blame that on the fact that left-wing liberals won't listen talk radio and won't generate enough income to pay for the air time (see: Air America).

It is cool with me if Mr. Robbins wants to bash the Bush administration, the war, the economy, etc. That is what freedom is speech is all about. When he starts bashing the broadcasters for not being "fair" then he has gone too far. If he wants to let his voice be heard on the airwaves then he needs to buy some. Just like the very ones he "apologized" to have done.
Tim Robbins is one collossal horse's rear!! I'm still waiting on him and Susan Sarandon and all their Hollyweird, arrogant, libtard herd to stampede out of the country like they promised they would back in 2000 when Bush got elected.

What's the problem Tim? Don't have enough help packing up? I've got some time and I'd be happy to help haul your butt to the curb FOR FREE!

If this is the best TR has to offer, I'll be sure to boycot his films from now on. Not that he's done anything noteworthy since "The Shawshank Redemption" anyway.

The only other movie of his I really enjoyed was "Bull Durham" and that was only because of Kevin Costner -- he and Tim's wife, Susan Sarandon, had great chemistry together in that movie...
Robbins should stick to acting, he's good at it. I've enjoyed several of his films.

He is pointing out some flaws/errors of the neocons, and that's pretty easy because just like socialists on the left, they're obvious, and often the same problem. But what is he offering?

His perceived solution is the other side of the same coin, which is just as bad. Would you trade a bag of cr@p labeled Republican for an identical BOS labeled Democrat? Tim thinks its a great deal.

We need some real change, not somebody tagging up in the corner, and looks like we haven't and aren't going to get it from the duocratic goobers in DC.

Vote them all out, you've got nothing else to loose and possibly a shot at a decent replacement.
This seems to be the latest trend. What do you do these days in Hollyweird when your career has tanked and you haven't worked in a couple of YEARS??? Become a talking head for the liberal political machine and regurgitate the same cr@p to anyone who will listen.

I still think he should fulfill his promise and MOVE - maybe to Cuba. He and Susan can take Michael Moore with them. I'm certain they would find exactly the type of open, liberal and welcoming environment they so desperately crave down there with Fidel and the boys.

Top Down Beemer, As always well said, only you forgot to throw in the right winger political machine that regurgitate the same crap to anyone who will listen. Remember Rush? How about all the spin from fox news?

Yes they have a right -- and I exercised that right to not support them after that. They got so offended at the people that disagreed with them that any chance of me changing my mind was lost. They became more pop/main stream oriented after that and were more interested in the media attention they got as political instigators and they lost my interest as an artist.

We do live in a great country and I am thankful for the freedoms and rights that we have as Americans.

I do agree that if they said they would move if Bush was elected -- they should be true to their word...don't threaten and think that it's going to affect the votes...if you're going to threaten -- be ready to back it up...they think they are more importatnt -- guess they learned they're not.
Thanks for the compliment JJ, but I wasn't talking about radio talk show hosts or TV news personalities. Those people do that for a living. I was specifically talking about actors. I have yet to see any Hollyweird talking head types regurgitating the conservative line. Those celebrities who ARE of a conservative political viewpoint are much more reserved and classy - you don't see them on TV, red in the face, loudly ranting and name calling. No news stories being written about them like this one about TR.

The problem with actors like Tim Robbins is that they believe their own press and believe they are SO important that the sun shines out of their behinds! They honestly think that because they are famous that people should HAVE to listen to them but, like the Dixie Chicks, they get all upset when it backfires on them and they get boycotted.
