from the good ole Decatur Daily...

Decatur Daily Publisher Clint Shelton was arrested Saturday in Decatur and charged with public possession of an open container.

Decatur police arrested Shelton, 47, and another individual at 11:53 p.m. at Well Street and Lafayette Street Northeast. The men were released less than an hour later on $500 bail each.

Shelton issued a public statement Monday, saying he and a friend were walking in the area with plans to go to Waffle House.

“We each had a mixed drink in a plastic cup and it was wrong,” he said. “I apologize to my wife and family and the people I work with for a bad decision that I made.”

Decatur Police Chief Ed Taylor said a patrol officer noticed the men on foot and arrested them after discovering the beverages during an investigative stop. The alleged offense violates city code.

OG MY GOD! A (SHOCK) MIXED DRINK IN NO LESS THAN A PLASTIC CUP!

these miscreants should be thrown UNDER the jail! How dare they!

Jesus christ. THIS is the kinda crap we rationalists have to put up with living in a fundamentalist world. i can understand walking down the street with a beer can - bad for the kiddies, you know. but why in the freaking world can't an adult walk down a public street with a perfectly legal adult beverage?

how does this make sense?

carry on, mr. shelton. i'll buy TWO of your papers tomrrow in protest for ya.
Under the jail? I think not. Why, under the jail is too good for these miscreants. A public flogging or better yet a hot bucket of tar and some feathers. Why goodness no, even that is too tame for these...these..godless heathens. No I think this calls for a good old fashioned public hanging. Yes, thats it. A hanging. Thats all that will do. Send a message to those would be ruffians who might dare to break a city ordinance. We must keep alcohol where it belongs, behind closed doors and in the back rooms of churches. The very nerve of these two.

It's not about the alcohol-it's the waffles. Who knows what plans those two had in mind for the poor waffles at 11:53 P. M. on a Saturday night. But, I bet it involved syrup and whips....... huh, whip creme that is!!!!
Big Grin

Hmmmm....

Were they also responsible for this?

About the appleby's incident...I know a teen who ordered a virgin daquari at a restaurant and her server gave her a real one. When she called it to his attention he (server) got a big kick out of this ...but no one else did.
Has it occurred to any one that these two were, in fact, going in the waffle house to check on the well being of innocent waffles? Even I, in my limited social contact, have heard rumors of the horrible things these poor waffles have to endure. As a young batter they are beaten and whipped to a frothy frenzy, then subjected to extreme temperatures. Rumor has it that these establishments have developed a particularly cruel device know as a waffle iron whose sole purpose is to burn these poor things to a golden brown. After enduring these tortures, their reward is to be smothered in butter and hot syrup and uncerimoniously torn apart and consumed by the sadistic patrons.

Criminals? I think not. Heros would be my guess.
this is exactly the silly crap i complain about all the time, our government and judicial system is out of control, they sit in their posh little offices and think of any and every way to impose their will on us citizens and steal the hard earned money out of our pockets, i guess taxing us to death just isn't enough for these self indulgent yahoo's

i have a friend in lauderdale county who lives in a very nice double wide manufactured home, he is required to purchase a sticker every year for his home, last year he was in and out of the hospital several times so he was late in paying the bill, by the time the county was finished adding on late fees, citations, etc. the bill went from $103 to $232, and a threatening letter from the DA's office that unless he got it paid within 10 days, a warrant would be issued for his arrest. Geeeeezzzz.
Maybe now HE KNOWS how it feels to be publically humiliated!!!! WILL you MR OWNER, continue to publish folks stories of bad luck or when they "mess up" and commit a crime??? LOOK out..you may have a child..grandchild ..or spouse that gets into trouble with the law! Would you want it broadcasted before they were proven guilty? Maybe this will be an eyeopener for you.
Humiliated? He wasn't humiliated. He broke a ridculous city ordinance and admitted it, then he published it in his own paper. I don't see any humiliation here and I doubt he will stop printing stories about people "messing up" and committing a crime. A crime should be public knowledge and the criminal should be published as a warning to the public.

The charge is akin to receiving a citation for speeding. I doubt there is a lot of concern for embarrassment on the part of the individual arrested.

On a positive note, they were WALKING instead of DRIVING. Apparently, Shelton's friend did not have a name.

I’m not being facetious atall but there are those you do not arrest for such infractions; the owner of the newspaper and a police chief to name two.

I hate alcohol beverage in any form and despise it’s use but this is ridiculous. The public is better off not knowing some things.

A conversation with mr. Shelton by ‘The Deserving’ is the proper way to handle this.
