Federal holidays are not always state holidays. I believe I am correct that at least some schools are open on Veteran's Day, as are some banks.

As for schools being out for King's birthday, those who have attempted to stay open usually do not have enough students to make the day worthwhile. A friend who taught school when the holiday was first enacted told me that each year for three years the attendance declined until they finally gave up trying to have classes on this holiday.

If you would do some research, you will know that Lauderdale county celebrated Robert E. Lee day, and not MLK. The court house any way.

Yes, It was the Court House and the state offices also close for Confederate Memorial Day. Thank God there is still a little justice left in this world. The public school system is screwing everything up in the way it rewrite history and teach it to our children.
I work at a bank and I think it is the only one that isn't closed today! Frowner I would have loved to be off and sent my kiddos on to school and had the day by myself. But, I guess that is what one personal day a year is for. I use all my vacation and personal days to either go somewhere with my family or be off with the kids when they are out of school. But there is ONE personal day that I save for a day at home alone with no children .... Big Grin

Why is the Lauderdale County school system the only school system in this area having school today?

I bet if it was MLK day they would be observing it! Presidents day is much more worthy than MLK day.

Is this Valentines doing?
It seems your issue is with MLK Day. Now if you want to get technical there is no such thing as Presidents Day. The official name is Washington's Birthday, but commonly called Presidents Day. So there you go, there is one for a black man and one for a white man.
