I've never heard of Finebaum (??) but maybe they can trace the caller or perhaps cameras on campus caught the idiot.

They've estimated them at 130 years old I believe it is. But this guy has the feds on him, and feds don't get involved in vandalism cases... This poison is potent enough to seep through water pipes and is very toxic to humans. Vandalism charges may very well be the least of his problems.

You are right... A black eye for the entire state really. The University of Alabama will be unfairly hammered because of this moron. And so too will the state as a whole. We all bring it on ourselves a little bit. The recent success of the two football programs has unfortunately brought out the worst in the fanbases. This is a cherry on top of the ridiculousness that has been going on for a while.
I am Crimson and White thru and thru but regardless of who did it, it is terrible. NO school wants their campus and grounds to be vandalized by ANYONE.
A few years back Ole Miss had to to advise their fans at the Grove to stop pouring out their alcoholic beverages out on the ground. They were killing some of the trees there by doing that.

It is a terrible thing that someone did this for whatever reason but before you get too upset about it here is an article from the Birmingham News, from 2008, about the two trees being distressed and dying within the next few years anyway. And they just told on FOX 54 news that Auburn has been growing seedlings from the two trees for several years now.

And there is speculation on several web blogs about the timing of the release of this story the day after the NCAA announcing that AU is under investigation concerning two recruits from Louisiana. That it has been a deversion from the NCAA investigation.

They should have plenty of time to grow two 100 year old oaks to TP before their next national championship.
What happened to the rivalry being fun? I'm always down for a good prank but to say this guy went too far is a big time understatement. A prank is something like rolling the corner with crimson & white or for students to kidnap the mascot during the game (of course returning the mascot in good health and well fed after the gameSmiler but not something like this. The damage this guy did is beyond just being vandalism.
As a Bama fan I not only hate to see something like this happen to our rival but am ashamed that such a trashy redneck put himself forward as another Bama fan. I guess there's a few bad apples in every bunch.
The guy that did this is too much of an idiot to even insult.

Check out this article:

"And every time we think we've seen the most ridiculous SEC antic, the state of Alabama is always there to remind us that we were sorely mistaken".

-or-

"Otherwise, the stupidity is going to continue to escalate, like some modern-day version of the Hatfields and the McCoys, until someone, doubtless a "fan" who wasn't even capable of graduating from high school, actually dies over this insanity"

The guy that did this is an idiot, plain and simple.

I listened to one of the clips on Finebaum's website where he talked to an arborist. He referenced the Treaty Oak in Texas which I had never heard of.

http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/treatyoak/hist1.htm

Hopefully, the Toomer Oaks will have the same outcome. The Treaty Oak was saved and the guy responsible was sentenced to 9 years in prison.

If the idiot who did this called in a radio show to brag and the story is now getting national attention, he won't be able to keep his mouth shut. He'll get caught and I bet it will be pretty soon.
Thanks for that link NashBama.
This incident is certainly a crime against nature and I am willing to bet that there will be legislation to protect these trees for the future in the event they do survive.
I hope the idiot that did this is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. He needs to be made an example of!

Reports are this is going to be a class C felony which could carry a HEFTY fine along with 1-10 years. Also, this is NOT including federal charges that are still pending. The feds and the EPA will investigate and this cat is in for a LOOOONNNNGGGG spring. lol

somehow I'm not shocked that you would be the first poster on here to downplay this. lol Wink
UG- Not sure why I posted on three- Normally I am just a voyeur on the forums, read a lot, have my opinion, but don't post much. I think this one just got to me. I would do the same if the crime was unrelated to football and was about a crime against a child or and animal and there were multiple posts about it. I will try to curb my enthusiasm in the future.

Thanks,
The problem is that you can't just plant new trees were the old ones were. There is a lot of poison in that soil, nothing will be able to grow there. With spring rains, the poison could spread to a wide area and affect even more plants in the area.

To fix the jersey on Bear Bryant's statue, they just pulled it down.

To fix the tree poisoning, they have to remove the giant trees, remove the sidewalks, dig up all the contaminated soil in the area, replace the soil, and replace the sidewalks around the trees.

That's a lot of work and expense, not to mention the national embarrassment from this story.

I'm predicting this guy gets 3 to 6 years behind bars.

I bet he cares now.
