Ever since the tornado outbreaks we experienced in the mid 1970's images like this are the stuff of my nightmares. I can remember trying to sleep on the sofa with my little sister while my parents were glued to the TV, listening to weatherman H.D. Bagley give the latest bad news about where the tornadoes had struck and where they were headed next. Ever since then, when I'm stressed I have tornado nightmares.
My stress dreams are tornado dreams, too, Beemer. Weird, huh?

My grandfather had 8 brothers and sisters. In April, 1908 a huge tornado struck Giles County, TN and went through the Bee Springs community. His entire family except for himself and his baby sister were killed. There was also a visiting neighbor child who was killed, also. I heard stories about that all my childhood.
This picture is photoshopped. Notice the glow of the lights - obvious time-lapse photography. The flag is blurry, more proof of time-lapse.

Notice that the tornado is not blurry at all. Are those stars in the tornado? And look at the chunk at tree-top level that has been taken out of the tornado.

Someone took a very nice dusk or dawn picture and photoshopped the tornado on top.
Vick and Beemer...just an FYI to tell y'all that you're not alone. I dream of tornadoes often when I am stressed. Mine have been occurring many years as well. Of course, in my case, I was injured in a tornado as a teen and come by my fear of tornadoes honestly but, for as long as I can remember, I have had dreams of tornadoes during stressful periods in my life.

Wow, vick, you are the ONLY other person who has ever told me they dream about tornadoes when stressed in their waking lives. It's been going on for about 30 years and counting with no signs of going away.

Out of curiosity, how did he and his sister escape being killed?

Actually, his father survived, too. His baby sister was about 6 weeks old and was found unharmed in the cotton field beside the house, on a mattress, still covered with her blanket. My grandfather was injured, but the father was not. There's information on the Giles County website. I've actually found the news clipping. The entire family was buried in a trenchlike grave. There's a site there with all the listings of the tornado victims and a list of the people in the cemetery. My grandfather would never go to the storm cellar when it was storming. He'd make us all go, but he'd stay outside watching the sky.

Actually, time-lapse photography describes an animation using multiple frames. The blurry flag you note is only proof of a longish exposure. On a windy evening, it wouldn't be unreasonable to see the flag blurred at any shutter speed slower than say 1/80 of a second or so. The lights would also take on the "glow" seen here.

If the on-camera flash fired (which it appears) the "stars" you see would likely be raindrops in the foreground. While any photo can be "photoshopped", without seeing source images I don't see any reason this image has necessarily been altered.

Also, while there may well be a tornado present, without seeing the ground we can only speculate there's an extremely low "wall cloud" or something. Beautiful stuff!

Here's a "small" wall cloud crossing Savannah Highway in Florence.

I don't think it's time lapse. I think it's just movement in the flag. Cheap digital cameras have slow shutter speeds. If it is time lapse she has some guts to sit there with the shutter open.

It's defiantly real. Lori Mehmen too the photo, API ran with it and it is on this week's Yahoo photos.

If you search her name you can find a dozen other news articles with the photo.
